Liz Cheney holds presser to back Pelosi freezing conservatives from Jan. 6 probe, Republicans fume

U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) went rogue on Wednesday, holding her own press conference to bash Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy for pulling out of the Jan. 6 Commission after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi blocked conservative Reps. Jim Jordan and Jim Banks from being on the committee.

Cheney stands as the sole Republican backing Pelosi in her biased packing of the commission. She stood on the steps of the Capitol and railed against her fellow Republicans, accusing McCarthy of not wanting to get to the bottom of the Jan. 6 riot.

“At every opportunity, the minority leader has attempted to prevent the American people from understanding what happened, to block this investigation. … I am absolutely dedicated and committed to making sure this investigation holds those accountable who did this and ensures that it never happens again,” she vowed.

After Pelosi put the kibosh on Jordan (R-OH) and Banks (R-IN), McCarthy yanked Republicans from the select committee, further enraging Cheney. The Wyoming representative was blunt in her support for Pelosi, “I agree with the speaker’s decision.”

She stated that the rhetoric from Jordan and Banks was “disgraceful” before alluding to one of them being a material witness in the proceedings and accusing the other of grandstanding for political gain.

Cheney also said she doesn’t think Kevin McCarthy should be House Speaker, “I think that any person who would be third in line to the presidency must demonstrate a commitment to the Constitution and a commitment to the rule of law and Minority Leader McCarthy has not done that.”

”Is she a Republican?” freshman Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) asked referring to Cheney, according to Politico. Nehls was one of the five Republicans selected by McCarthy to serve on the select panel.

“For her to stay on is not right. And she ought to have some consequences for that,” noted Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC). “She should probably just go and switch parties and be a Democrat. She’s gonna violate everything. She’s not in a leadership position so she has got some freedom, but this is so blatant.”

The House Minority Leader was incensed over Pelosi’s partisan move. McCarthy was blunt, “Unless Speaker Pelosi reverses course and seats all five Republican nominees, Republicans will not be party to their sham process and will instead pursue our own investigation of the facts.”

At a news conference on Wednesday, he accused Pelosi of an “egregious abuse of power.”

“She went further than anyone’s gone before. I think it’s very clear to the American public that this is a sham,” McCarthy remarked. “It’s undeniable this panel has lost all legitimacy and credibility. It shows exactly what I warned back at the beginning of January: that Pelosi would play politics with this.”

“Pelosi has broken this institution,” he declared.

Pelosi brushed off the blowback from Republicans, “Perhaps you mistake me for someone who would care about that.”

“With respect for the integrity of the investigation, with an insistence on the truth and with concern about statements made and actions taken by these Members, I must reject the recommendations of Representatives Banks and Jordan to the Select Committee,” Pelosi stated when rejecting Jordan and Banks who were both supporters of former President Trump. “The unprecedented nature of January 6th demands this unprecedented decision.”

“Speaker Pelosi just admitted the obvious, that the January 6th Select Committee is nothing more than a partisan political charade,” Jordan proclaimed in a tweet on Wednesday.

“It really made me angry. I served my country in Afghanistan and she is saying that I’m not up to playing a serious role on this Jan. 6 committee,” Banks told The New York Post Wednesday. “But it just goes to show all along this was never a serious effort on their part, it’s all a political witch hunt. They want to make this all about Donald Trump, dragging Republican members of Congress through the mud and attacking 75 million people that voted for Donald Trump.”

“When I came out of the gate, the minute that Kevin McCarthy asked me to do this job and I rolled up my sleeves and started digging into the real questions that nobody’s asked, that Democrats don’t want to answer to on why the Capitol was vulnerable on Jan. 6 when we had real intelligence three weeks before and we didn’t do anything to prepare for it,” he commented. “Democrats don’t want to talk about it because at the end of the day, the higher up the food chain you get, the closer to Nancy Pelosi you get, and that spooked Nancy Pelosi and that’s why she rejected Jim Jordan and me.”

Democrats on the select committee heatedly defended Pelosi’s decision. They asserted that McCarthy could still appoint members who would take the investigation seriously. Rep. Jamie Raskin, who is a select committee member, referred to Banks’ statement released on Monday after McCarthy named him to the panel. Banks posited that the committee was created “solely to malign conservatives and justify the left’s authoritarian agenda.”

“The speaker is making clear we’re going to have a serious comprehensive investigation. This will not be just another run-of-the-mill, partisan food fight,” Raskin declared.

House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) stated that Banks and Jordan “were clearly selected just to be disruptive, and that’s not acceptable.”
