Australia deports Britain’s Katie Hopkins for joking about not wearing a mask

Australia is about to give conservative British commentator Katie Hopkins the boot for posting a now-deleted Instagram video where she joked about answering her hotel door naked and maskless while quarantining and preparing for a “Big Brother VIP” appearance.

The excuse given for revoking Hopkins’ visa is that she breached Australia’s quarantine rules. That’s a stretch given that she only kidded about doing so on a video posted to her Instagram account. It appears as though the country’s leaders were looking for an excuse to deport her. “Big Brother VIP” also sacked her.

Australia’s minister for home affairs, Karen Andrews, stated on Monday that the government had reviewed Hopkins’s visa and subsequently decided to deport her. She told the Australian press that visa holders should abide by health officials’ guidelines. She did not clarify if that includes joking about them.

“We won’t tolerate those who don’t,” Andrews proclaimed. “We will be getting her out of the country as soon as we can arrange that.” She said Hopkins’ behavior was “shameful” and described it as “a slap in the face for all those Australians who are currently in lockdown.”

“The fact that she was out there boasting about breaching quarantine was appalling,” she told ABC News Breakfast.

Sydney, Australia is about to end a five-week lockdown on July 30 due to an increase of COVID cases related to the Delta Variant. That means nearly half of Australia’s 25 million people are suffering under a lockdown currently.

New South Wales police said in a statement that Hopkins had been fined $1,000 for allegedly failing to wear a mask. They then assisted immigration authorities in deporting her on Monday afternoon to the United Kingdom.

All new arrivals in Australia are required to complete two weeks in a hotel quarantine. They must put on a mask before meals are delivered then wait 30 seconds to collect their food to avoid transmission.

Andrews said the decision to allow Hopkins to enter Australia had been made by the New South Wales state government “on the basis of potential benefit to the economy.”

Leftists accused the government of “allowing a far-right troll into Australia.”

“The decision… is particularly painful for the 35,000 Australians who remain stranded overseas,” claimed Labor MP Andrew Giles. He proceeded to blame Andrews for letting Hopkins enter the country in the first place.

“I was shocked to see that lady – who fortuitously I’ve never heard of before and I hope to never hear of again. To think she could think that the measures we are taking to keep our community safe can be treated with such juvenile, imbecilic behavior is just mind-boggling,” New South Wales health minister Brad Hazzard told reporters in Sydney. “To think that she could put our teams in our health quarantine, our staff … to think that she thinks it is acceptable to put them at risk and to put our broader community at risk is completely abhorrent and I hope she is on the first plane back.”

Hopkins is a vocal critic of illegal immigration and Islamic radicalism as well. She also strongly supported former President Trump and was banned from Twitter last year.

She made her opinion on mandated mask-wearing clear on Instagram, stating, “Politicized ‘science’ now has a uniform. If you are wearing a mask you are considered superior, well-read, selfless, thoughtful, and you are a foot-soldier for the Socialized Health Care system. You are an enforcer of all that is ‘good’.” She continued, “If you are mask-less you are an ignorant individualist, with no place in civilized society, no right to travel, and no right to browse in civilized stores, even though masks are no longer lawfully enforceable in the UK.”

Hopkins also called lockdowns the “greatest hoax in human history” in her Instagram post, according to the BBC.
