Trey Gowdy: Democrats will never apologize for life-costing mistake of defunding police

As violent crime surges across the country in urban centers run by Democrats, Trey Gowdy says that if America is expecting unaccountable liberal politicians to apologize for championing the literally “dead wrong” social experiment of defunding the police, the country is going to be waiting a long time.

“They won’t ever apologize for this lethal mistake. Even if they did, it is really hard to hear apologies from the grave,” the host of “Sunday Night in America” on the Fox News channel declared.

Gowdy, the former South Carolina congressman and federal prosecutor, began his monologue by highlighting the hypocrisy of Democrats for suddenly flip-flopping on “racist” voter ID and admonished them for their unfounded hysteria over the U.S. Supreme Court nomination of now-Justice Amy Coney Barrett.

He then turned his attention to the destructive impact of cutting the law enforcement budget, resulting in fewer cops on the beat, which nonetheless gained such traction in the far-left cohort that controls the agenda of the Democrat Party.

“You knew that was a dumb idea when you heard it. You knew we really don’t want social workers showing up when someone is breaking into our homes or shooting up the neighborhood. Unfortunately, there were some who did not understand the idiocy of defunding the law enforcement, and tragically, many of those people serve in city government in some of America’s largest cities,” Gowdy explained.

“New York and Chicago, Los Angeles, Baltimore, Austin, Seattle are just some of the cities which decided to cut funding for law enforcement. And what should be a surprise to absolutely no one, violent crime is going up,” he continued.

The left got what it wanted in downsizing the police budget, Gowdy asserted, and as a result, “Crime is spiraling out of control in many of these same cities. Violent crime is up; people are being assaulted, robbed, and shot, and stabbed and killed in tragically high numbers during this summer and spring of criminal carnage.”

The Fox News host noted that crime victimizes poor neighborhoods (unlike the upscale enclaves where the liberal elite mostly reside) most severely and that it is “the most insidious tax of all” on low-income neighborhoods.

“These communities were told the police were so bad we need to either get rid of the police or slash their funding. These communities were told they would be safer with less police,” he said.

Without mentioning her by name, Gowdy then appeared to call out radical U.S. Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.).

“One allegedly progressive Democrat member of Congress said that she didn’t care if people don’t like defunding the police. She’s gonna keep advocating for it anyway…according to her, she doesn’t like ‘death.’ I want you to know the bitter and tragic irony of what she believes.

“There is more death, more crime, more mayhem because of her political beliefs, but she doesn’t care. She would rather make her point than save her constituents’ lives. She was literally, dead wrong. She and others promised you and your community would be safer with fewer cops. They won’t ever apologize for this lethal mistake. But even if they did, it is really hard to hear apologies from the grave,” Gowdy concluded his soliloquy.

Bush, as well as several members of the ‘Squad’ who are defund-the-police backers, have nonetheless reportedly spent taxpayer and/or PAC money on personal security. And Bush ally Mayor Tishaura Jones of crime-ridden St. Louis reportedly has doubled the number of her police bodyguard detail.

As far as the requirement to produce government-issued identification at the polling place is concerned, which he discussed at the outset of the editorial (and which Democrats until now considered practically worse than waterboarding), Gowdy quipped that “Turns out it is only racist when we suggest it. But not when they suggest it. But you probably haven’t gotten your apology yet.”

Pivoting to former President Trump’s third Supreme Court appointee and the Democrat/media reaction to it, Trey Gowdy recalled that “You were told Judge Coney Barrett was gonna send you back to ‘The Handmaid’s Tale.’ Well, the Supreme Court just finished its first term with her on the bench…which of your rights did Justice Amy Coney Barrett strip away from you?” he asked rhetorically.

“I can’t think of anything either, But I haven’t heard a single apology for their dishonest efforts to denigrate her,” he added.

Even the trendy, liberal New York magazine has conceded that woke policies such as defunding the police may be backfiring on Democrats within their constituencies, which is prompting second thoughts among at least some in the political establishment. Moreover, the Democrats’ gaslighting attempt to rebrand congressional Republicans as police defunders because the latter voted, en masse, against the $1.9 trillion so-called American Rescue Plan fell flat.
