Law enforcement officials have made an arrest in the ghastly attack on a Chicago couple in the aftermath of the Puerto Rican People’s Day Parade last month, with authorities revealing an additional tragic aspect to the case.
Video appeared to depict a group of men dragging Gyovanni Arzuaga and Yasmin Perez — both of whom were in their 20s and were parents of two young children — out of their vehicle, with one of the assailants allegedly opening fire in the incident that occurred near Humboldt Park. Arzuaga was rushed to a local hospital where he tragically died from a gunshot wound to the head. Yasmin Perez, who was critically injured, passed away three days later.
Acting on tips from the community, the fugitive task force of U.S. Marshals Service arrested a suspect, reportedly a convicted felon, on Friday in San Diego where he had allegedly fled. The suspect is awaiting extradition to Chicago where he is expected to face a first-degree murder charge in the shooting incident.
At a presser announcing the arrest, Chicago PD Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan suggested that Arzuaga was shot “almost execution style.”
Multiple media reports identify the suspect as Anthony Lorenzi, 34. The suspect reportedly has 26 felony arrests and seven convictions, according to WGN News.

Tragically, detectives have concluded that, based on ballistic tests, Yasmin Perez was likely shot inside the car with a .40 caliber handgun. “Authorities revealed Saturday that it now appears Perez was unintentionally shot to death by her boyfriend during the frenzy that night,” ABC 7 noted.
“’Everything points to — once again, more than likely — that [Arzuaga] discharged that firearm, accidentally, causing that gunshot wound’ to Perez,” Deenihan said, the Chicago Sun Times reported.
A handgun was reportedly found under Arzuaga’s body.
Deenihan added, however that “this individual in custody — Lorenzi — he is the one responsible for this death. There is nobody else responsible.”
The horrific encounter was apparently prompted by a minor traffic accident according to detectives, but the investigation is ongoing. Cops are still on the lookout for the other men who swarmed the vehicle that displayed a Puerto Rican flag in the melee that occurred at approximately 9:15 p.m. on June 19. GoFundMe fundraisers for the family have collected about $135,000 so far.

“There is nowhere to run. There’s nowhere to hide. We will find you and bring you to justice,” Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown declared at the presser announcing the suspect’s apprehension. “I hope this arrest brings at least some measure of relief to the family of this young couple.”
Under far-left Mayor Lori Lightfoot, gun crime in Chicago — America’s third most-populous city — continues to surge, however.
After refusing President Trump’s offer to help while he was office, Lightfoot, who has previously sought to downplay the ongoing violence, is now asking President Biden for federal resources to combat the pervasive lawlessness.
