‘America is a beacon of hope!’: NJ House candidate and veteran takes BLM to task for insulting Old Glory

New Jersey Republican candidate and Air Force veteran Billy Prempeh blasted Utah’s Black Lives Matter chapter after they proclaimed that the American flag is a “symbol of hatred” for Black Americans over the 4th of July.

“The fact of the matter is that black people are Americans, and black history is American history,” Prempeh told Fox News Friday. “And the flag is absolutely a part of our history. The good, the bad, the ugly, all of it. And that’s what makes America great because, despite all of that, we continue to move forward.”

“Statements like that, saying that the flag is divisive and that it’s carried by KKK members, it’s not necessarily true,” the 31-year-old Republican stated. “It’s a giant gaslighting statement to make to try and put all Americans, all the people that are pro-America, into a box stating that that’s a hateful symbol.”

“I see the flag as a unifying symbol, a symbol that has changed over time,” Prempeh declared. “And we haven’t always had the same American flag… And I believe that symbolizes all the things that have happened in this country over the past 245 years.”

“And in 245 years, the world’s followed suit – to the point that many leave their home countries to become a part of the American identity and continue to push our country forward,” Prempeh claimed. He noted that Americans have made “incredible, incredible advancements” when it comes to civil rights and social justice.

The founder of Black Lives Matter in Utah, Lex Scott, told Fox News earlier in the week that the post was meant to contrast her criticism of the flag and the reaction that it would draw versus hate groups embracing the American flag.

She made her views clear on Facebook: “When we Black Americans see this flag we know the person flying it is not safe to be around. When we see this flag we know the person flying it is a racist. When we see this flag we know that the person flying it lives in a different America than we do. When we see this flag, we question your intelligence. We know to avoid you. It is a symbol of hatred. Enjoy this fun compilation of racism, hate and death threats given to Black Lives Matter Utah from flag waving Americans,” Scott wrote.

Prempeh’s parents emigrated from Ghana in the 1980s. He is very proud that his family has now become part of this country and he cares deeply about his state and city. His home is in Patterson, New Jersey.

“I’m an Air Force veteran, and I took a lot of pride fighting under the American flag,” he commented. “And I still take a lot of pride in being under that flag.”

The young candidate also believes that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “would be proud” of what this nation has accomplished.

“It’s only been 80 years since segregation,” he noted. “And we had the first black president elected not once, but twice.”

Prempeh is aggressively running against Rep. Bill Pascrell (D) for New Jersey’s 9th Congressional District seat. He loves America, the flag, the national anthem, our police, and our laws and is not ashamed to say so. In his first ad, he proclaims, “America is a great nation, and Americans are incredible people. Anyone who tells you otherwise is straight-up lying to you.”

During the ad, he carries an American flag with him and promotes his “America First” campaign message.

He’s calling for term limits and for Pascrell to retire due to the high crime and unemployment rates in Patterson. Even so, he wishes his 84-year-old opponent well as rumors swirl that he’s not in good health.

Netizens love Prempeh’s attitude:
