Flag-snubbing Olympian’s tweets resurface mocking other races, joking about rape, beating ‘whitepplkids’

Olympian Gwen Berry’s disturbing history of tweets where she joked about rape, threatened to stomp a child, slurred white people, attacked Latinos, and made racist generalizations about Chinese individuals is coming back to haunt her.

Berry will represent the U.S. in hammer throwing this month in the Tokyo Games. She made headlines during the trials for turning her back as the national anthem played while covering her face with an “Activist Athlete” shirt and for disrespecting the American flag. Now, problematic tweets that are from her verified account are resurfacing. Some of them are decades old.

Her actions have been politically polarizing. She has received strong support from the left and the White House. But conservatives have denounced her actions and called for her to leave the Games.

Berry is refusing to cave and is angrily firing back at her detractors. Turning Point USA’s Benny Johnson tweeted to Berry: “Oh Gwen – you should RESPECT the American Flag and the National Anthem if you want to compete for TEAM USA.” She clapped back at him: “The point is to compete … which I will be doing.”

The tweets were uncovered on Friday by various people on the internet. The first to report on them was The National Pulse.

“This lil white boy being bad as hell!! I would smack his ass then stomp him!! Smh #whitepplKids hella disrespectful,” she tweeted back in 2011. Berry had also declared that “white ppl” run their “damn mouths too much” and are “sooo retarded when they are drunk.”

Berry posted slurs against Chinese people and “Mexicans.” She also wrote, “I’m about to rape my lunch.”

A number of the tweets are very old and occurred before Berry qualified for the Olympic team in 2016 and 2021. A number of them appear to have been written when Berry was in her early 20s. She is now 32.

Protesting is nothing new for Berry. She raised her fist to make a point during the completion of trials last week and has made no secret of how she feels about the national anthem or the American flag. She reportedly claims to not hate America but seems to have an issue with everything it stands for. In an interview with the Black News Channel, she made it clear that she never said she didn’t want to represent America at the Olympics.

I never said that I didn’t want to go to the Olympic Games, that’s why I competed and got third and made the team,” Berry claimed. “I never said that I hated the country. I never said that. All I said was I respect my people enough to not stand for or acknowledge something that disrespects them,” she contended. “I love my people. Point blank, period.”

After turning her back during the Olympic qualifiers ceremony, she asserted that she felt set up because she was told that the anthem would play before she took the podium.

“They had enough opportunities to play the National Anthem before we got up there,” Berry declared. “I was thinking about what I should do. Eventually, I stayed there and I swayed, I put my shirt over my head. It was real disrespectful.”

“I was p***ed, to be honest,” she stated.

“They said they were going to play it before we walked out, then they played it when we were out there,” she added. “… But I don’t really want to talk about the anthem because that’s not important. The anthem doesn’t speak for me. It never has.”

“My purpose and my mission is bigger than sports,” Berry proclaimed. “I’m here to represent those … who died due to systemic racism. That’s the important part. That’s why I’m going. That’s why I’m here today.”

The liberal activist is still considering protesting at the Olympics. “We’ll see. You know, it just depends. It depends,” she said to CNN’s Don Lemon. “You know everything is a spur of the moment. It depends on how I’m feeling and depends on what I want to do in that moment and what I want to do for my people in that moment. And I will do whatever comes upon me and whatever is in my heart.”
