Ted Cruz: Dems claiming Republicans defunded police like OJ saying he’ll find the real killer

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) mocked the Democrats’ “chutzpah” for dishonestly claiming that the GOP wants to defund the police as the crime rate skyrockets across the nation due to progressive policies.

“I gotta say, it’s remarkable that the White House is now apparently employing comedians,” Cruz humorously noted to Sean Hannity on Tuesday night. “You know, there’s an old Yiddish word for that: chutzpah. For them to run out and claim that it’s Republicans who want to defund the police, that’s like an arsonist showing up at the fire and blaming the firemen,” the Texan senator quipped.

“That’s like the Chinese blaming the Americans for the Wuhan virus. That’s like OJ [Simpson] saying he’s gonna help find the real killer,” Cruz continued. “That’s like Democrats saying they’re the ones who want to build the wall. It’s absurd. It’s ridiculous and they know it.”

“But you know, they’re also counting on the media all encircling Joe Biden and saying, ‘Poor Uncle Joe, he doesn’t want to abolish your police.’ Well, last time I checked, Bill de Blasio, the Democratic mayor of New York, campaigned on defunding the police, cut a billion dollars from the NYPD and you know what… de Blasio was standing on that same Democratic stage with Joe Biden. Joe might not remember it, but de Blasio was right there. Last I checked, AOC’s a Democrat. Last I checked, Tlaib’s a Democrat. Last I checked, Omar’s a Democrat. Last I checked, the Summer of Love… you remember when you had the CHAZ autonomous zone, you had a Democrat going, ‘Oh, it’s just the Summer of Love!’ I mean, I want to see the Democrats make the case to the American people, ‘Put us in charge!’ like the mayor of Portland can say. ‘Put us in charge! Let us abolish your police. If you don’t like your murder rate, we can increase it eight times.’ Eight hundred percent,” Cruz asserted.

“Look, the Democrats understand they are in trouble. Abolishing the police is stupid. The American people know that. By the way, African Americans and Hispanics overwhelmingly oppose abolishing the police. So, suddenly these rich, white liberals that said ‘Let them eat cake,’ ‘Let them be without police,’ are saying ‘Oh, no! This is unpopular.’ So they are trying to claim these aren’t the droids you’re looking for. They’ve never supported it. It’s absurd. It’s ridiculous,” he remarked.

“And Sean, if you want to know what Joe Biden thinks, look no further than two of the senior officials he appointed to the Department of Justice: Vanita Gupta and Kristen Clarke. They are two of the leading advocates for defunding and abolishing the police. Last year, in writing a congressional testimony, they advocated it. Biden appointed them to two of the top positions in the Department of Justice. And by the way, out of 50 Democrats in the Senate, you know how many voted to confirm both of them? All 50. Every single Democrat voted to confirm vocal advocates for abolishing the police. That’s who’s helping to run the Department of Justice right now,” Cruz concluded.

White House adviser Cedric Richmond pushed the talking point on Sunday trying to flip the issue and blame Republicans for the “Defund the Police” movement which was started and promoted by Democrats. He contends that is the case because conservatives refused to vote for Biden’s $1.9 trillion coronavirus aid package that had very little to do with the actual pandemic. The president claimed last week that cities and states could divert $350 billion in relief aid towards their respective police forces. A position he did not aggressively promote but a point that could in the end be potentially weaponized against Republicans.

“When we were in Congress last year trying to pass … an emergency relief plan for cities that were cash-strapped and laying off police and firefighters, it was the Republicans who objected to it,” Richmond claimed on “Fox News Sunday.” “And in fact, they didn’t get funding until the American Rescue Plan, which … allowed state and local governments to replenish their police departments and do the other things that are needed. Republicans are very good at staying on talking points of who says defund the police,” Richmond asserted, “but the truth is, they defunded the police, we funded crime intervention and a whole bunch of other things.”

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki also sought to use that same talking point to blame the GOP for defunding the police while speaking to reporters on Monday: “Well, the president did mention that the American Rescue Plan, the state and local funding, something that was supported by the president, a lot of Democrats who supported and voted for the bill, could help ensure local cops were kept on the beat in communities across the country. As you know, [it] didn’t receive a single Republican vote. That funding has been used to keep cops on the beat,” Psaki contended. “I think that any local department would argue that keeping cops on the beat to keep communities safe when they had to, because of budget shortfalls, fire police is something that helped them address crime in their local communities.”
