The importance of the Arizona election audit

Op-ed views and opinions expressed are solely those of the author.

Regarding the 2020 presidential election, someone is being less than truthful with the American people.  It’s important that we find out who.  The results of prior elections have been certified, so there is no changing those.  But Americans really want to know the truth.

The Democrats say that the election was fair and that any ballot irregularities were very minimal and certainly unintentional.  The expansion of the means to vote was brought on by the pandemic but really should be the norm.  It should be easy for all eligible voters to cast their vote whether they chose to do that in-person, through the mail or by other convenient means.

Anything less places an undue burden on voters, particularly lower income and people of color.  Since we strive for equality in this area, it is important that it is easy to cast a vote. This meant that some states decided to mail ballots to all eligible voters, so they knew all voters had a choice.

The result was massive voter turnout with 40 million more votes compared to the 2016 election.

Since the election results from 2020 have been certified by every state, and by the courts on numerous occasions, any actions to challenge vote counts are useless.  In fact, it undermines our Democracy to challenge the legitimacy of a duly elected president.

Even though they believe the audit is costly, time-consuming and useless, they worry that the results of the audit will be biased and provide misinformation to the public. The audit is being conducted by a firm whose CEO has expressed his view favoring the GOP position.

But they argue, as long as the audit is fair, it will show the results are accurate.  Arizona went for Biden.  And Biden is a legitimate president.

One the other hand, the GOP has a much different view. They say that much of the 40 million additional votes were not legitimate.  There were so many paper ballots being printed and often mailed to people who did not request them, that voter irregularities are sure to exist.  They claim they have video proof and sworn affidavits showing exactly where the irregularities occurred.

They believe there was irregular activity in as many as six battleground states.  In each of those states Trump had a sizeable lead, until the extra perhaps irregular ballots were found and counted.  In some areas, they claim, districts shifted because of statistically impossible events.  That shifted states from the Trump column to the Biden column.

They further claim that they have never really had their day in court.  Most courts, including the Supreme Court, dismissed the cases for lack of standing rather than through an examination of the evidence.  As such a forensic audit that is fully recorded to be perfectly transparent is the only way to show what the true vote count was.

The GOP claims that the Arizona audit will show that tens of thousands of Biden votes were not legitimate.  That would be enough so that the final vote in the county and the state will show that Trump had the majority,

Other states like Pennsylvania, Georgia and perhaps Wisconsin may also consider a forensic audit to determine accuracy.  The GOP believes that if these audits were conducted another 3, 4 or even 5 states would reach conclusions similar to Arizona.

That means, the American people would know the truth.  Is Trump the big liar?  Should his defenders be barred from practicing law because they supported “the big lie?”

Or have the Democrats really participated in fraudulent activities that changed the outcome of a presidential election?  Are the Democrats telling “the big lie?”

As soon as the results from the Arizona audit are made public, sometime this summer, we will know who is telling the truth and who is really telling “the big lie.”
