A horrific video made the rounds online Sunday capturing a group of black men in Chicago converging on a couple who were celebrating the Puerto Rican People’s Day Parade by displaying the Puerto Rican flag from their vehicle.
The Hispanic couple was dragged from their vehicle by up to six assailants and shot in cold blood in the street, with the man, a father of two, killed and the woman being shot in her neck.
Just as horrific is the reaction of some on social media, who seemingly approve of deadly mob violence if the cause is interpreted to align with their political views.
Conservative pundit Ann Coulter shared the video on Twitter along with the caption: “Try finding news about this murder on Google.” A blue-check Twitter account under the name Richard Taite responded to claim the couple was displaying a Confederate flag and “trolling that neighborhood.”
He then added, “Yeah I don’t give a sh*t Ann, and you should’ve mentioned that.”
Good call, moron. It’s a Puerto Rican flag. (So I guess you DON’T think they deserved to be murdered in cold blood.) pic.twitter.com/8Q6OSm1hLZ

While the story did get some traction, Coulter’s point was apparently that it did not see the coverage a similar story would have if the victims were black. As seen above though, Coulter called “Richard Taite” a “moron.”
She also shared a news story of a South Jersey waitress being abducted after going outside to confront a group of black diners who didn’t pay for a $70 bill — in many cases, servers are responsible for unpaid tabs.
“Waiting for @RichardTaite to investigate any pins the waitress was wearing to tell us if she deserved it,” Coulter remarked.

Coulter may be in for quite a wait, because “Richard Taite” essentially disappeared, apparently deleting his account altogether.
But not before digging the hole even deeper, acknowledging that while he may have gotten the flag wrong, had the couple been white supremacists he would be “agnostic” about them being gunned down in the street.
Yeah, he apparently did. pic.twitter.com/IMMRV01aBz

With the left driving identity politics like never before and our politics as acerbic as ever, the embrace of mob justice is a troubling prospect. Especially when considering that all it takes to be labeled a white supremacist is to be a Republican who voted for Donald Trump.
As for the waitress, after taking off, the vehicle reportedly did a U-turn down the road and pushed her out.
She suffered a number of bruises and a possible concussion during the assault and abduction and was taken to a local hospital, according to WPVI. She was treated for her injuries and released.
Here’s a sampling of some of the responses to the story from Twitter:
Man straight up deleted his account after those epic ratios lol

Nothing says Liberal tolerance, and respect for Democracy like trying to rationalize and justify a mob committing murder over a comically inaccurate flag identification.

Imagine if the killers were White. MSNBC would dedicate 24 hr coverage to it.

“I’m Richard Taite, and I believe it’s ok for a 24 year-old kid and his girlfriend to be executed depending on what flag they’re flying.”

I wonder if @richardtaite will return and say that him confusing the Puerto Rican flag with the Confederate flag and then excusing the assault and death of two Puerto Ricans is not his fault, because he relapsed and will be going into treatment?

Is this the white supremacy problem the federal government talks about?
