A number of Democrats “paid tribute” to the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting Saturday by brazenly lying about the nature of the horrific 2016 mass shooting.
Exactly five years ago Saturday, on June 12th, 2016, Islamic terrorist Omar Mateen opened fire at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, killing 49 people before being killed himself during a standoff with police.
Despite initial speculation that the mass shooting may have been motivated by homophobia, it was later confirmed that he’d pledged allegiance to the Islamic State before the attack and had a history of anti-American sentiment.
“You need to know that they need to stop bombing Syria and Iraq. The U.S. is collaborating with Russia, and they’re killing innocent women and children, OK? My homeboy Tamerlan Tsarnaev did his thing on the Boston Marathon. My homeboy [inaudible] did his thing. So now, it’s my turn, OK?” he said during a 911 call made from Pulse moments after the shooting began.
Listen:
It was also found that he’d chosen Pulse randomly.
“[P]rosecutors acknowledged in their closing statement that Pulse was not his original target; it was the Disney Springs shopping and entertainment complex. They presented evidence demonstrating that Mateen chose Pulse randomly less than an hour before the attack. It is not clear he even knew it was a gay bar,” according to HuffPost.
A security guard at Pulse reportedly even recalled Mateen asking him where all the women were only minutes before the shooting began.
These are the facts.
Yet here is how elected several Democrat members of Congress chose to “honor” the victims of the mass shooting:
5 years ago we lost 49 beautiful souls at Pulse nightclub. I continue to hold in my heart those who were killed, their loved ones & the survivors of this unspeakable act of hate toward the #LGBTQ+ community. We must #EndGunViolence & build a nation based on love for each other.

5 years ago, we lost 49 people in a deadly, hate-filled shooting at the Pulse nightclub. The LGBTQ+ community was targeted and killed—all because they dared to live their lives.
Once again I say: hate has no place here. And we must end the gun violence epidemic. pic.twitter.com/mf8Bzwrv8O

The mass shooting that happened five years ago at Pulse Nightclub will never be forgotten. Let us honor the Black, Latino, and LGBTQ+ lives we lost and recommit ourselves to ending the hate and senseless violence against them. pic.twitter.com/7QB50dLxTu

Today we #RememberPulse. 49 lives lost to senseless gun violence and anti-LGBTQ hate. A tragedy that is still hard to comprehend.
But tomorrow, with Pulse always in our minds, we continue the fight to end gun violence and hatred. We will not rest until we do. https://t.co/riWgaDqkEZ

Five years ago, 49 LGBTQ+ friends, loved ones, and allies were taken from us at Pulse nightclub. Their memories are a call to action on gun violence and a call to make sure we build a country where LGBTQ+ individuals can live without fear. pic.twitter.com/Cw7cYRP1vA

They lied by suggesting or in some cases outright asserting that the shooting had been motivated by anti-LGBT sentiment. These brazen lies incensed Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Glenn Greenwald, who himself is a gay man.
In tweets posted Saturday afternoon, he slammed everybody who’s been lying about the nature of the Pulse nightclub shooting “for their own benefits.”
“Anti-LGBT animus was not part of that massacre. It dishonors the memory of the victims – & the LGBT cause – to lie about what happened,” he wrote.
He added that watching congressional Democrats in particular lie so brazenly to advance their political agenda was “infuriating.”
Look:
Democratic Senators and activist groups promoting a false, conclusively disproven narrative about the Pulse shootings for their own benefits. Anti-LGBT animus was not part of that massacre. It dishonors the memory of the victims – & the LGBT cause – to lie about what happened. https://t.co/bhjpeaVSS5

This tweet is an absolute lie. Every journalist who covered the PULSE shootings and trial will tell you this. It’s infuriating to watch Senators blatantly lie this way. https://t.co/tYxqNEU8pZ

Omar Mateen had no idea PULSE was a gay club. He spent the prior day looking at Disney locations, but they were too secured. He entered “Club, Orlando” in Google – not “gay club” – to find it. He never uttered an anti-LGBT syllable, saying his motive was US bombing in Iraq/Syria.

Maybe some people keep claiming that the PULSE massacre was motivated by anti-LGBT animus because they were told that and never learned otherwise. It’s a horrible enough massacre – and it did devastate the LGBT community – without lying about it:https://t.co/VFuTGFpmwp

More here from @quasimado, who covered the trial and acquittal of Mateen’s wife for @HuffPost. That trial definitively proved Mateen wasn’t motivated by LGBT hatred. There’s no benefit — except to some NGOs — to allowing an outright myth to survive:https://t.co/vF8oX3Dhty
— Glenn Greenwald (@ggreenwald) June 12, 2021
Even NBC News has acknowledged that the PULSE massacre was not motivated by anti-LGBT sentiment. Their article is definitive as it should be. The evidence leaves no doubt. There’s no excuse for Senators and LGBT groups perpetuating this lie:https://t.co/V36i1ZHfS8

As of Sunday morning, not a single mainstream establishment media outlet had called these Democrats out for their lies, seemingly proving once again that being a Democrat means being granted a waiver to lie as often and as brazenly as desired.
