It appears as though so many months in lockdown isolation has made people forget how to behave in public.
Flight attendants aboard an American Airlines flight to Charlotte, North Carolina faced a “living hell” as grumpy passengers made rude comments about their weight and yelled obscenities in a scene that was posted to TikTok by Brent Underwood.
The plane was forced to divert to Raleigh due to weather, but one man sarcastically said that it was because the flight attendants needed to eat, calling one a “fat gorilla.”

According to Underwood, other passengers did try to calm down one of the men who was talking smack, but the flight attendants had had enough. One made an announcement calling out the rude passengers, threatening to turn them over to the police if they continued to behave poorly and harass the flight staff, which prompted applause from most of the plane. The smack-talker continued to make snarky comments, however, including mocking the people who clapped, saying “They love the police. Anything to do with the police, they love it.”
Later in the video, one of the attendants was heard trying to talk with the same man about wearing his mask properly. He once again reiterated that the airline would leave the man at the gate if he refused to comply, and the attendant recommended the man just keep his cool.
During another announcement, an attendant shamed “the passengers that made this flight a living hell for the flight attendants,” once again prompting applause from those who know such behavior is unacceptable no matter how frustrated you are. He also threatened to return to the gate after someone called him a “drama queen,” sparking more anger and apologetics from the beleaguered travelers.
“He didn’t mean it! It was the hunger talking!” Yelled an off-screen passenger, referring to the attendant’s threat. “You’re not you when you’re hungry! Someone get him a Snickers!”
In an interview for the Charlotte Observer, Underwood expressed his disgust with the ill-mannered passengers.
“There was absolutely no excuse for it,” Underwood said. “It doesn’t matter what you look like. Everybody deserves respect. And everybody deserves to be punished equally for being a rude person like that. Why would you call a person a fat gorilla?”
It would appear as though flights have recently been a popular place for people to unleash their anger on a captive audience.
In late May, a woman allegedly punched a female flight attendant in the face repeatedly, knocking two of her teeth out and breaking her nose.
“In the beginning, they were not arguing. They were just like ‘do this, don’t do that, don’t do this, don’t do that.’ Then even the flight attendant said, ‘Don’t touch me,’” one traveler from the flight explained the incident.
Police arrested 28-year-old Vyvianna Quinonez on suspicion of battery in relation to the incident, but one person aboard the flight contends that the flight attendant started it by allegedly doing something to Quinonez that caused her to say “get off of me,” ‘quit touching me,” “get your hands off of me,” according to passenger Michelle Manner. She contends that this confrontation also started because of an improperly worn face mask.
“It was so unnecessary,” Manner explained. “In the first altercation, she had said she was going to call the captain. She should have just stayed there in her back cubby.”
