What happens when Jen Psaki and internet stars get together…asks the White House on its official Twitter channel.
Americans found out yesterday when press secretary Jen Psaki hosted the very first “Social Media” press briefing at the White House where she took questions from “influencers” like HGTV breakout stars, the Property Brothers.
The White House Twitter account posted a gimmicky photoshop of all the social media icons who participated in the briefing and promoted the event: “What happens when Jen Psaki and internet stars get together? We’ll find out tomorrow. Join the first-ever social media briefing tomorrow. Tune in as Jen answers questions about jobs, the economy, and more.”
The participating “stars” were comedian Benito Skinner, blogger Brittany Xavier, wellness influencer Hannah Bronfman, Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin who founded The Home Edit, Buzzfeed creator Curly Velasquez, the Property Brothers Drew and Jonathan Scott, Tik Tokker Amelie Zilber, blogger Jordan Stratton and stylist Chrishelle Lim.

If your eyes glazed over as you read the guest list thinking, “Who the hell are these people?” you are not alone.
Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro pointed out on Twitter in response to the news, “This is a very, very serious administration.”
Nothing says “ we are in touch with working class Americans” like inviting internet-famous people who make millions using their platforms to the White House for a briefing when very real problems like inflation, a crisis on the southern border, rising violent crime rates, and a labor shortage are impacting real Americans.
It is difficult to imagine a Property Brother stepping forward to ask, “Violent crime rates around the country, in some areas to the highest levels in decades. What does the Biden administration have to say to those impacted, afraid to live their lives as usual, and what will you do to curb this statistic?” or “Will the Biden administration rescind the massive bonus unemployment benefits they extended to the American people through September now that it’s causing a labor shortage and stifling our economic recovery?”
In fact, Psaki kicked off the segment with the renovation stars by telling them her daughter is “obsessed” with their HGTV show.
“Can I just say first that my daughter… I don’t know if this is your TV demographic, but my five-and-a-half-year-old is obsessed with your show. She loves home shows. That is her ask more than Disney movies,” she said.
Of course, the conversation went on to afford Psaki a chance to tout the Biden administration.
“What have you learned through the pandemic about the importance of housing and what could be done to support it?” Drew Scott asked the press secretary who went on about the administration’s accomplishments. Twin brother Jonathan followed up with a question about Biden’s American Jobs Plan and climate change.
Many took to social media to offer their reactions to the “first-ever social media briefing,” including a few unhappy Democrats and reporters:

I assumed this was satire. But no. We are just this big of a joke all on our own.
We are going to have social media influencers ask pre-screened questions to the press secretary? At least she won’t have to “circle back” on anything.

Two months of bad jobs reports, ongoing crisis at the border, rising gas prices, inflation, etc, etc

“We’re going to cut off unemployment, do nothing about student loans, let voting rights wither and die, allow ourselves to negotiate away any useful infrastructure improvements, but, hey, here’s not one…but TWO Property Brothers. That’s Property Brothers plural, my friends.” https://t.co/hZvvdKI7nG

You know what would be actually cool is if Psaki held a virtual press briefing with local community journalists instead of influencers and the Property Brothers.

The briefing comes on the heels of another “things that make you go, hmm” moment this week when renowned “Vogue” photographer Annie Leibovitz was spotted at the White House to photograph Jen Psaki for a feature in the magazine.
