Former Green Beret shreds AOC’s ‘ignorant’ claim of Jan. 6 ‘war’ experience ahead of Memorial Day

Florida GOP Rep. Michael Waltz, a U.S. Army officer and veteran, railed at New York Democratic colleague Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s comparison earlier this week that lawmakers’ experiences during the Jan. 6 Capitol riot were akin to being in “war.”

In an interview a week ago on “Latino USA,” Ocasio-Cortez claimed that she is currently undergoing therapy following the “extraordinarily traumatizing” incident earlier this year, adding that for several members of Congress, the demonstration was like they had “served in war.”

“Oh yeah, I’m doing therapy but also I’ve just slowed down,” she said. “I think the Trump administration had a lot of us, especially Latino communities, in a very reactive mode.”

Waltz, a former Green Beret and current Army National Guard colonel, told Fox News’s Shannon Bream that while he did not want to diminish anyone’s reaction to the riot, which he called for justice involving all perpetrators, he dismissed Ocasio-Cortez’s comparison as “ignorant,” especially as it comes just ahead of Memorial Day when the country honors and remembers its fallen warriors.

“I want to be clear: January 6 was a terrible day for this country. Every one of those perpetrators need to be brought to justice,” Waltz, who has been awarded four Bronze Stars — two with valor — and is the first Green Beret to be elected to Congress, said in prefacing his remarks.

“But for her to make a comparison — and I was on the House floor when this happened, not sitting in my office — for her to make that comparison, she’s never been fired on with (rocket-propelled grenades), hit with (improvised explosive devices), lost men and women to their left and right in combat, seen civilians maimed,” Waltz continued.

“It’s just an ignorant, ridiculous comparison to make, and it’s a disservice to all of us who have experienced all that defending this great nation — especially as we’re heading into Memorial Day,” the Florida Republican added.

Waltz was not the first service member and combat vet to scrutinize Ocasio-Cortez’s comments.

Newsmax TV host Greg Kelly, a retired Marine Corps lieutenant colonel, and AV-8B Harrier fighter pilot, mocked the New York Democrat over her frequent overreactions and embellishments.

“Here she is, having a meltdown on the floor of the House of Representatives at some point,” Kelly said during a segment, playing a clip of Ocasio-Cortez. “Anyway, I think that she’s very, very silly. But, she’s getting therapy and, uh… she obviously could use some.”

He went on to say that she has been caught “BS-ing everybody about what happened to her on Jan. 6,” going on to play a clip of her telling Instagram followers in a video someone hollered at her to “hide, hide, run and hide,” as rioters allegedly approached her office.

“I thought I was going to die,” she said in the video, going on to claim she hid in her office bathroom as a man broke in and yelled to her staff, “Where is she!? Where is she!?”

The man turned out to be a Capitol Police officer, who Ocasio-Cortez went on to describe as appearing hostile to her.

In reality, Ocasio-Cortez was not in the Capitol Building but instead was across the street at the time in the Cannon House Office Building.

“Ok, keep being the drama queen,” Kelly went on. “She knows how to do that — can we play the video of her flailing one more time. Because everything she just said was not true. It’s been proven to be false.”

“This is a person given to dramatics,” he continued, adding that people should just “ignore her.”
