Chris Cuomo falsely claims lab theory is ‘a newer notion,’ Trump’s US government had not been open to

Chris Cuomo falsely claimed on his Wednesday evening CNN show that the United States government had not been open to the theory that the coronavirus escaped from a lab in Wuhan, China until now.

Cuomo continued pontificating that this “new” theory is politically charged saying, “Trumpers who were complicit in playing down the pandemic reality in America are now seeing more interest in the China lab theory as some kind of vindication, enough to play ‘I told you so’ with Fauci.”

There is one problem with the CNN host’s theory, he himself reported on it over a year ago in April 2020:

“Alright, we have breaking news on our watch. It is a very provocative headline. Here’s the headline: The United States is pursuing the theory that the virus started in a Chinese lab, not a market. I know the internet is rife with conspiracy theories and concerns that this was something that was worked on… and part of the curiosity is we don’t know a lot because somebody changed a virus structure  enough to make it a mystery for us.”

Social media users did not react kindly to the blunder, reposting his report on the potential lab outbreak from last year as NewsBusters news analyst Nicholas Fondacaro did.

On his Tuesday night show, Cuomo spun another theory that the “political right” obsessed over the origins of COVID-19 to “forward an agenda.” He went on to say that conservatives were all about “making assumptions” to cast blame on China instead of “our leadership failing under Trump.”

The Trump administration’s virus response resulted in the largest and most effective testing system for the coronavirus in the world, a replenishment of the stockpile left barren by the previous administration with billions of pieces of PPE and over one hundred thousand ventilators, and Operation Warp Speed which allowed for the development of coronavirus vaccines in record time.

In 2020,  the United States had a lower excess mortality rate than Europe and had among the lowest case fatality rates of any major country. Although often unreported, excess mortality figures demonstrate the United States’ response was stronger than Europe’s.

This is not the first of the younger Cuomo brother’s many coronavirus blunders. Last March, a doctor working for New York State was sent to the Hamptons to test Chris Cuomo and his family for coronavirus at a time when tests were scarce and New Yorkers were perishing. Their results were expedited at a state lab.

While New Yorkers were confined to their homes, Cuomo defied quarantine orders after being infected to go check out undeveloped property he bought in East Hampton, maskless.

Cuomo was most recently under scrutiny for joining strategy calls with his brother, Governor Andrew Cuomo on how the governor should respond to the numerous sexual misconduct allegations against him. The younger Cuomo reportedly advised the Governor to take a defiant position and refuse to resign. CNN said he will not be participating in strategy calls moving forward but will not be disciplined.
