U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz blasted MSNBC host Brian Williams after he claimed the Texas Republican is a shill for Moscow in promoting “Russian propaganda.”
Cruz’s response came after he initially ripped a U.S. Army recruiting video that he characterized as advancing a “woke, emasculated military” in contrast to a Russian military recruitment ad that focuses more on the physicality involved in being a soldier.
The ad Cruz was responding to was an Army recruiting video that features a female soldier who had two lesbian mothers who, among other things, highlighted her marches for social justice when she was younger.
“It begins in California, with a little girl raised by two moms,” says Cpl. Emma Malonelord, who is narrating the ad, which is animated. “Although I had a fairly typical childhood, took ballet, played violin, I also marched for equality. I like to think I’ve been defending freedom from an early age.”
“When I was 6 years old, one of my moms had an accident that left her paralyzed,” she added. “Doctors said she might never walk again, but she tapped into my family’s pride to get back on her feet, eventually standing at the altar to marry my other mom.”
Cruz contrasted that ad with one for the Russian military featuring male recruits engaging in various drills in a high-energy video that showcases physicality.
During his Friday show, Williams said Cruz was guilty of a “remarkably stupid lapse in judgment” while going on to nickname him “Kremlin Cruz.” In addition, Williams claimed, without evidence, that Cruz was pushing “Russian propaganda” and that someday the Texas Republican aspired to become head of Russia.
Cruz responded on Twitter by labeling Williams, who was fired by NBC News as its nightly anchor in 2015 after it was discovered he lied about being in a U.S. Army helicopter that was shot down in 2003 over Iraq, a “pitiful example of corrupt corporate media,” while going on to bring up his dismissal.
“Now, he’s throwing a hissy fit that I criticized the ridiculously woke video that the Biden admin put out. Williams accidentally told the truth, when he describes it as ‘a video meant to diminish the U.S. military,'” Cruz noted further. “TRUE. That’s the problem. (The Pentagon put it out.)
“Now, with his trademark ignorant snark, he’s dubbed me ‘Kremlin Cruz.’ Three problems: (1) I hate communists, my family was imprisoned & tortured by communists, and Brian is a shameless apologist for Russian (and Chinese and Cuban) communists,” the Texas Republican continued.
“(2) I was arguing that our military needs to be able to kick the ass of Russian soldiers. It’s Brian & his lefty comrades that are working relentlessly to diminish the effectiveness of the U.S. military—the finest fighting force on the face of the planet,” he added.
Cruz then noted that the Biden administration reportedly will lift Trump-imposed sanctions on a Russian-built pipeline, Nord Stream 2, that will carry natural gas into Germany, which is a boon to Moscow economically and geo-strategically.
“And (3) JUST THIS WEEK Biden gave Putin a multi-billion-dollar gift, when he waived mandatory U.S. sanctions to allow Russia to build Nord Stream 2, a massive natural gas pipeline to Germany. Who authored the sanctions that STOPPED NS2? That would be me,” wrote Cruz.
“Cover that, Brian. But that would be actual news, something you don’t do,” he wrote. “Use your condescending wit to call Biden ‘Kremlin Joe’—he’s the one illegally giving billions to Putin. But your corporate overlords wouldn’t let you. Congrats, Brian. You are Pravda.”

In an interview with Fox News, Cruz elaborated on his objections to the Army’s recruiting ad. “The job of the military is to kill the bad guys. And it is to strike fear in the enemies of America,” he said, adding: “People sign up to join the military because they want to keep us safe, they don’t want to sit around a circle, emoting and passing daisies back and forth.”
Others have recently criticized what they view as the military focusing more on so-called “woke” left-wing social justice and race issues rather than emphasizing warfighting.
For his part, Fox News host Tucker Carlson predicted a military disaster for U.S. forces in the near future if the Pentagon does not reexamine its focus.
“What if the woke brain virus began to infect the last remaining meritocracy in this country, the U.S. military? If that happened, it would be a legitimate disaster,” he said in December.
