35 tons of garbage, including 700 lbs of human waste, removed from LA homeless camp

This week, Echo Lake Park in Los Angeles California, the location of a former homeless encampment, received a much needed, and long overdue, deep cleaning.

The park was closed last month and since then, city officials have been working to clean and revitalize the park and have reportedly removed over 170 tents and other debris, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Among the 35 tons or 70,000 pounds of garbage, there were literal piles of poop, amounting to 180 pounds of feces and 564 pounds of urine according data from L.A. Sanitation & Environment workers.  This did not include excrement collected from portable or permanent restrooms.  Other hazardous waste like needles used for drugs, gasoline, and kerosene amounted to 300 pounds of the total trash collected, the LA Times noted.

City officials reportedly didn’t reveal the plans to close the park until the last minute. However, in the months leading up to the closure, more than 160 homeless who were living in the park were relocated to taxpayer-funded hotel rooms and other interim living situations.  The cleanup wasn’t completely peaceful, according to ABC7, with one confrontation leading to the arrest of a person accused of battery of a police officer.

A report from the Board of Recreation and Park Commissioners from mid-March showed there were plans to revitalize the park, including what were likely much-needed fixes to the bathrooms and drinking fountains.  Other plans included resurfacing of a playground, revitalizing the lake’s bridge and redoing the boathouse where the often photographed swan boats are located.

Rose Watson, a spokeswoman for the city’s Department of Recreation, said “the park repair progress is going well and moving rapidly.”

The homeless problem has been of growing concern in the apparent communist state of California.  Driving down the freeway feels to some like they have entered a third world country, with homeless tents off of what seems like every freeway offramp. Last month, a Clinton-appointed judge ordered the city to find housing for all homeless residents on skid row within 180 days, apparently because in a communist state people can only be helped by the government.

The situation appears to be so bad on the left coast that many are choosing to leave the state.  Census numbers confirmed that the population fell by more than 182,000 last year.

Many who leave the state are political refugees, opposed to the socialist policies that created this homeless problem and seeking a taste of freedom that red states enjoy.  In Republican-led Florida, businesses and individuals have been allowed to thrive during the pandemic while California has remained locked down with draconian policies that have done nothing to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Even the liberal elitists have grown tired of the socialist policies that seem to perpetuate the homeless problem in California and were reported to have started fleeing the once Golden State in droves last year.

California policies seem to encourage the homeless to stay homeless.  One Twitter user questioned those who support policies to let the homeless stay.

Others encourage the city to clean up MacArthur park next.

But the real problem may not be whether or not the city cleans these parks up like they are doing in Echo Park.  The real problem appears to be whether public officials can change course on the socialist policies that discourage people from taking care of themselves and seem to encourage such encampments to spring up.
