NYC parent says private school intensely pressured students to become BLM activists

Andrew Gutmann made headlines when he decided not to re-enroll his daughter in an elite private school in Manhattan over their “obsession with race.” Now he’s stating that the school put intense pressure on parents and students to embrace the Black Lives Matter movement.

The whole affair started when Gutmann, who is reportedly an investment banker, pulled his daughter out of The Brearley School where she had been a student for seven years. He then proceeded to send a scathing 1,700-word letter to 650 families castigating the school and accusing it of attempting to “brainwash” students with woke philosophies such as Critical Race Theory. The school is not the only one in New York that is promoting racially-based curriculums.

He charged the institution with a “cowardly and appalling lack of leadership” that openly appeases “an anti-intellectual, illiberal mob.” He also decried the school’s “vacuous, inappropriate, and fanatical use of words such as equity, diversity, and inclusiveness.”

“By viewing every element of education, every aspect of history, and every facet of society through the lens of skin color and race, we are desecrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and utterly violating the movement for which such civil rights leaders believed, fought, and died,” he posited in his letter published by journalist Bari Weiss.

At the same time this was happening, it was being reported that the institution was asking at least one parent or guardian to participate in “required anti-racist training and ongoing reflection,” and parents were being asked on the application form to “share how your family values align with the school’s commitment.”

In an interview with Fox News, Gutmann flatly stated that the school had gone way too far in its ongoing battle against racism.

“We already do a horrific job in this country teaching history, and now we’re going to make that 10 times worse, we’re going to eradicate that,” Gutmann commented during the interview. “Our country doesn’t survive not teaching history and civics, and it sure as hell doesn’t survive teaching our children to hate their country and their history.”

He also alleges that the school put extreme pressure on parents and students to “advocate for Black Lives Matter.” He said that the school basically told them that “[w]e want you, we want your daughter, from kindergarten to 12th grade, we want your family to be an activist.”

“If you just stay silent, you’re racist. You have to be an activist for that. If you’re not an activist for an antiracism initiative, for Black Lives Matter, for example, you are racist, you are a bad person, you are an oppressor, you are not doing the right thing,” he angrily remarked.

The school “made it sound like they’re going to integrate this racial curriculum, this anti-racism curriculum, into everything – every class, into math, into [the] gym, P.E., it was shocking that they were taking that degree of integrating it into everything,” Gutmann noted.
