A GOP state senator in Oklahoma is facing condemnation from both sides of the political aisle for making a misogynistic and disrespectful joke about Kamala Harris.
Sen. Nathan Dahm, who describes himself as a constitutional conservative Republican, seems unconcerned about the possibility of being cancelled that includes calls for him to step down from his legislative position.
“If you think I’m going to be ‘politically correct’ you need to realize a few things. 1) you obviously know nothing about me 2) you’re in for a bad time 3) I’ve been assured my jokes are hilarious 4) your emotional opinions are irrelevant,” he wrote on Twitter.
The controversy got its start when Dahm irreverently (and symbolically) introduced a bill on Earth Day to ban paper straws. In equally opportunistically mocking Joe Biden, Mitt Romney, and Harris in the process, Dahm, 38, explained his rationale as follows in a news release:
“You have states, like California, where the leftist loons have banned plastic straws because they saw a video on social media about a sea turtle that was harmed by ingesting a straw,” he said. “So, under the guise of helping the planet, they’ve banned plastic straws, resulting in who knows how many trees now being cut down to make paper straws…”
“I’ve never met a single person who enjoys using a paper straw. They fall apart and turn to mush quicker than Joe Biden trying to string together a coherent sentence. They collapse like Mitt Romney under the slightest amount of pressure, and even with Kamala Harris…well, never mind…” Dahm added.
Today in honor of #EarthDay I filed a bill to ban paper straws. Enjoy my press release on why. Here’s an excerpt:

Sen. Dahm didn’t backtrack about his Harris-related satire when a reporter for Oklahoma TV station KTUL sought clarification.
“There’s a lot of different things that could be said about that,” he replied. “With her vast experience, and how she got her start into politics… one thing that could be said is that you can’t use a paper straw for a milk shake. But maybe Kamala Harris could because of her vast experience. Maybe she would be able to get that accomplished.
When asked to explain what he means, Dahm said: “People can do their research, and they can figure out what that is based on how she got her introduction into politics.”
Dahm also said that “there is some jocularity to the press release, to the bill itself…I realize some people will not appreciate that joke…I think we need to bring levity to some situations.” He added that he is fair game if others want to mock him.
The senator implied that his press release was meant as an attention grabber to focus news outlets’ attention on Biden’s alleged cognitive decline as well as RINO Romney’s flip-flopping and as a counterpoint to the media’s celebratory coverage of Harris.

Sen. Dahm is getting roasted on liberal Twitter and by Democrat elected officials.
Oklahoma President Pro Term Greg Treat, a Republican, also called out Dahm, describing his comments as “misogynistic, disrespectful, immature” and failing to live up “to a high standard of conduct and decorum” required of senators, Fox News reported.
In a lengthy statement, State Rep. Ajay Ajay Pittman, a Democrat, asserted, in part, that “Vice President Kamala Harris represents the best that America has to offer…I do not want Senator Dahm to apologize to me, Vice President Harris, women, or our communities of color. Dahm has made it abundantly clear that he was intentional with his words. The Senator has doubled down and mansplained the reasoning for his comments…the justification for sexism given by Senator Dahm in and of itself is grounds for censure…”
It remains to be seen if he will be subject any disciplinary action, such as censure, in the chamber. In seems unlikely that any resignation is in the offing, at least at this juncture.
In his controversial comments, Sen. Dahm may or may not have been alluding to Harris’ alleged relationship with then-Calif. Assembly Speaker Willie Brown in the 1990s. In 2019, Brown reportedly confirmed that they dated for a period of time. He has also been accredited with assisting Harris in her first run for elected office.
