A 61-year-old Asian man was viciously attacked in an alleged hate crime while collecting cans in East Harlem. The attacker repeatedly stomped his head and left the man in critical condition.
The brief video is incredibly violent and disturbing. It was released on Saturday by NYPD Crime Stoppers. The altercation occurred at approximately 8:20 p.m. Friday. The man was attacked from behind at the base of a 19-story apartment building that is currently under construction at 3rd Avenue and East 125th Street.
The attacker kicked and stomped the man at least six times. He then just walked away apparently leaving the man for dead on the sidewalk. Countless cars passed by and no one stopped to help the man.
Blood was smeared on the curb where the attack took place. The victim’s shopping cart remained at the scene as NYPD investigators canvassed the area for clues.

A passing bus driver called 911 at around 9 p.m. to report an unconscious and unresponsive man was lying on the sidewalk. The man was transported by ambulance to Harlem Hospital where doctors determined he had severe head trauma. He is now listed in critical, but stable, condition.
The man was not bothering anyone when he was assaulted. He was apparently pushing a shopping cart that was full of recyclables, looking for cans when he was jumped. He fought for his life according to police sources. He evidently had no ID on his person when the police found him.
WARNING: Graphic violent content.

There is no confirmation that the victim was targeted for his race, but the police are treating it as a hate crime nonetheless.
The NYPD Hate Crime Task Force is now looking into the matter and the word has gone out citywide to help find the suspect who committed this heinous attack. The man was reportedly wearing white tennis shoes, a black jacket, black pants, and a multi-colored baseball cap. The NYPD has released pictures of the man in question but it is hard to make him out in the blurry photos.

A number of grisly hate crimes have occurred recently against Asian-Americans in New York City. Hate crimes against Asian residents are up a staggering 450% compared to this time last year.
According to police, at least 62 anti-Asian hate crimes have occurred between Jan. 1 and April 18 this year. There were 12 reported during the same period in 2020, according to NYPD data. Because of the increase in crime, the NYPD has stepped up its patrols in Asian communities across New York City and its boroughs. They have also deployed undercover Asian police officers and they have added two additional detectives to their Asian Hate Crimes Task Force.
The police are asking that anyone who has any information on the attack call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). People can also submit tips by visiting the CrimeStoppers website at www.NYPDCrimeStoppers.com or on Twitter @NYPDTips. The identity of the informant will be kept confidential.
