Crime has crescendoed so high in New York City that one city council member is running out of reasons to use when trying to convince locals to remain in the city.

Speaking Thursday evening on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” New York City Council member Joe Borelli, a Republican, said that “woke Democrats” have transformed the city into a hellscape — perhaps even purposefully so.

“The rise in crime is not really a bug in this system; it’s a feature. For eighteen months, New York’s woke Democrats have systematically eroded criminal justice and empowered criminals,” he told host Tucker Carlson.

“There was bail reform, it was defunding the police, it was ending qualified immunity. It was criminalizing police actions. So it’s tough to imagine any other outcome that they could possibly have foresaw other than a spike in crime,” he added.

A recent New York Post report revealed that sexual assaults more than quadrupled from 2020 to 2021, going from just 9 reported between March 29th and April 4th last year to 38 reported this year. That’s a surge of 322 percent.

Some of this may be linked to the loosening of coronavirus lockdown restrictions.

“I don’t think this is a coincidence. People are out going to bars and restaurants again at 50 percent capacity,” Joseph Giacalone, a retired New York City Police Department sergeant who teaches at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, said to the Post.

However, the spike fits in with a larger trend of crime spikes in the metropolitan area– spikes that were seen as early as June of last year.

“For the month of June 2020, the number of people victimized by gun violence and murder in New York City spiked significantly, when compared to the same period in 2019,” the NYPD reported last July.

“Between June 1 and June 30, there was a 130% increase in the number of shooting incidents across the city (205 v. 89) as the number of shootings rose in every borough of New York. The number of people murdered citywide increased to 39 v. 30, (+ 30%) for the month, while the number of burglaries increased to 1,783 v. 817 (+118%) and the number of auto thefts increased to 696 v. 462 (+51%) citywide,” the report added.

The trend continued for the rest of the year and still remained as of mid-2021.

What’s notable is that you rarely hear Democrat politicians, mainstream media “journalists,” sports stars and Hollywood actors and actresses complain about these increased murders and sexual assaults. There’s a political reason for this, according to Borelli.

“You don’t hear about it, and you won’t, because the solution to this is proactive policing. It’s a type of policing that most of the celebrities, most reform activists, and people on the street protesting around New York City, it’s that type of policing which they specifically do not want,” he said.

“This is something that the left has been pushing for in this city for a generation, and now we have finally achieved it. We see an exodus, unsurprisingly, an exodus out of New York State. Not just to Florida, not just to the Carolinas and not just to [low-] tax climates,” he added.

People are even fleeing to New Jersey, which is a blue state — albeit one where criminals aren’t running free like in New York.

The exodus is so rampant, Borelli added, that he’s “running out of reasons to tell people to stay.”

But why — why are Democrats in far-left states like New York empowering criminals at the expense of law-abiding citizens?

According to Sen. Ted Cruz, it’s because the “Democrat Party has decided violence can benefit them politically.”

Look:

He posted the above tweet earlier this week in response to Democrats on the national level refusing to condemn California Rep. Maxine Waters for her incendiary rhetoric.

Last weekend she attended an anti-cop “protest” in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, and while there, she urged the “protesters” to “get more confrontational” and “make sure that they know that we mean business” if they didn’t get what they wanted.

While she didn’t specify what she meant by “business,” anti-cop activists have a history of rioting, looting, arson, attacking the police, attacking bystanders and even killing people. Waters likewise has a history of encouraging her supporters to use harassment and intimidation to bully her political opponents.

Regarding crime in the Democrat “utopia” of New York City, this week alone a corpse was found stuffed in a bag in Manhattan, a woman was executed in broad daylight in Brooklyn and a career criminal who’d been released without bail earlier this month on an attempted murder charge was re-arrested for dragging an NYPD officer with his vehicle.

Dangerous suspects being released without bail and then going on to commit additional crimes has become the norm in NYC thanks specifically to the “woke” Democrats mentioned by Borelli.
