While NBA star LeBron James has since backtracked from the “you’re next” tweet he posted Tuesday about an Ohio police officer, the backlash persists, and not only from those who generally support the police, but also from his peers as well.

Take former NFL star O.J. Simpson, a suspected murderer who was acquitted decades earlier for the fatal stabbings of his then-wife and her male friend. Even he felt compelled to post a condemnation — albeit a soft one — aimed at James.

“I’m a fan of LeBron … but you can’t fight every battle. You’ve got to pick your battles. It’s a war that must be fought, but sometimes you need to take your time and be a little more patient before you comment on some of these bad incidents that are happening with some police departments,” he said in a Twitter video posted Thursday.

“What I saw when I saw the full thing, the police guy had no choice, he responded. We wish he could have pulled a taser, we wish he could have done it in another way, but in that instance, if he hadn’t done what he did, it appears to me that another young American would have had her life taken.”

Watch:

After the fatal police shooting in Columbus, Ohio, Tuesday of 16-year-old black teen Ma’Khia Bryant, James posted a tweet warning that the officer who’d shot her would be the next one to be convicted like former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.

But like Simpson noted in his video, Bryant’s shooting strongly appeared to be justified. Bodycam footage from the shooting showed that she’d been about to stab another young girl with a knife when the officer had opened fire.

The fact that even Simpson knew better than James (not to mention the White House and large segments of the media and Hollywood) to rush to judgment drew the attention of several people, including Donald Trump Jr.

The alleged wife murderer wasn’t alone. Marcellus Wiley, another former NFL star, also slammed James.

Speaking Thursday on Fox Sports 1’s “Speak for Yourself,” which he co-hosts with Emmanuel Acho, Wiley slammed James for rushing to judgment and said that he prays that the loudmouthed NBA star will adopt some discipline.

“I want to actually pray that his profoundness … will one day match the power of his platform. He should have passed in this moment. Wait for it to come and then you’ll be able to see things clearer. But this is what happens when you want to be first, not right,” he said.

“I don’t care how smart you are if you don’t stop and think. Lebron James, he failed in that moment,” Wiley added.

He also said that he wished James was as concerned about all lives instead of just those that are extinguished during police encounters.

“Lebron James says ‘I’m so damn tired of seeing Black people killed by police!’ How about this sentence instead of that: ‘I’m so damn tired of seeing Black people killed.’ How about this sentence, even more idealistic: ‘I’m damn tired of just seeing people killed,'” he said.

Indeed, just earlier this week, a 13-year-old black girl fatally stabbed another 13-year-old black girl in Cincinnati, Ohio. But for some reason, James never tweeted anything about the tragic death of Nyaira Givens.

Perhaps James has been too busy reading the work of Malcolm X. A clip from last year of James talking about his reading habits went viral again this week, and judging by what he’d said at the time, it’s possible he’s still reading the same book.

When asked at the time about what he thought about X’s autobiography, which he claimed he was reading, James had no clear answer.

With the clip having gone viral again, some now wonder whether he’s even made it to page two yet:
