During an interview Sunday with Texas Sen. John Cornyn, Fox News host Chris Wallace questioned the senator about a tweet he’d posted days earlier in which he’d subtly questioned President Joe Biden’s cognitive state.

My question is, Sen. Cornyn, is that helpful to be sending out a tweet questioning President Biden’s mental faculties?” Wallace asked.

In response, Cornyn seemingly “caved.”

Watch:

Six days earlier, he’d posted a Politico story and quote about Biden’s habit of doing and saying so little:

The text shared above was a direct quote from Politico.

However, he’d then added a third tweet in which he’d asked in his own words, “[I]s he really in charge.”

Look:

The implication, one heard often in the conservative world, was that because of cognitive and physical deficiencies, Biden isn’t really in charge.

That’s why, some have argued, you often see Vice President Kamala Harris filling in for him in places where he ought to be leading, not her.

Yet when pressed about his tweets by Wallace on Fox News’ “Fox News Sunday,” the Texas senator claimed that others had misinterpreted him.

“I think there’s been a lot of confusion in the Twitterverse about that. … What I’m trying to do is reconcile the Joe Biden we heard from on Jan. 20th, the Joe Biden that many of us know from his previous service in the United States Senate, from the Joe Biden we’re seeing now jamming through $1.9 trillion of spending bills,” he said.

“You know, I’ve learned in Washington you only need to listen to what people say, you need to watch what they do, and so far there’s a conflict that I’m trying to reconcile. And I bet I’m not the only one.”

This prompted Wallace to ask for confirmation, “But just real quickly, do you have questions as to whether Joe Biden is really in charge and whether frankly, he’s up to the job?”

Cornyn replied with a no.

“That tweet was not meant to suggest anything about the president’s competency or physical or mental health. I know some people have suggested that. It certainly wasn’t my intention. I’m simply trying to reconcile the rhetoric with reality, and we need the reality to match the rhetoric. And it’s not it’s not matching right,” he said.

His response provoked some backlash later that afternoon on Twitter. A couple of users lambasted him for having unnecessarily “caved” given that congressional Democrats had spent years questioning then-President Donald Trump’s mental health — and all without ever once being called out by Wallace:

Plus, an Insider poll published in February found that only 44 percent of Americans were “extremely confident” or “very confident” with President Biden’s “mental sharpness.”

Of the remaining Americans, the majority (22.8 percent) were “not at all confident,” while a smaller 10.8 percent were “not so confident” and 17.7 percent were “somewhat confident”

But as noted last month by commentator Eddie Scarry, the media have been hellbent on ignoring both this sentiment and the evidence that shows why this concern is legitimate.

The evidence, he noted, included Biden stumbling three times while boarding Air Force One, referring to Harris as “President Harris” and forgetting the name of his own defense secretary and instead just referring to him as “the guy.”

“Lord knows what would have happened at CNN had Trump referred to any federal department as ‘that outfit over there.’ Dementia! Cognitive decline! And that would only be between breathless denunciations by Jake Tapper of Trump being racist for referring to a black four-star Army general as ‘the guy,'” Scarry wrote for the New York Post.

Meanwhile, whenever anyone now raises a single issue about Biden’s health, they’re attacked by the press, as evidenced by Cornyn’s interaction Sunday with Wallace.

“Recall that an entire news cycle was made out of a video that showed Trump walking slowly down an outdoor backstage ramp. Here’s the New York Times headline that came out of that: ‘Trump’s Halting Walk Down Ramp Raises New Health Questions,'” Scarry’s piece concluded.

“And here’s the paper’s headline after Biden ate it on the steps: ‘Biden is ‘doing 100 percent fine’ after tripping while boarding Air Force One.’ Nothing to see here, folks!”
