Biden finally agrees border fiasco a crisis to up refugee cap, AOC declares victory

President Joe Biden has finally admitted that there’s a crisis along the southern U.S. border. The irony is that he made the admission Saturday while announcing that he intends to increase the refugee admissions cap.

“We’re going to increase the number [of refugees],” he told pool reporters, confirming reports that had emerged the night before, according to Fox News.

He then explained why he’d said the exact opposite earlier in the week. As previously reported, he’d suddenly announced he’d be maintaining former President Donald Trump’s refugee cap, despite campaign promises to eliminate it.

“The problem was that the refugee part was working on the crisis that ended up on the border with young people. We couldn’t do two things at once. But now we are going to increase the number,” he reportedly said.

Former Trump administration official Stephen Miller has argued that Biden’s previous decision was the better one because of the “thousands of illegal immigrants … gaining automatic entry to the U.S. every day,” and because of the pandemic.

Though in Miller’s opinion, the best decision would have been to drop refugee admissions to zero:

To far-left Democrats like Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, on the other hand, Biden’s latest decision to increase the cap is the best one.

“This is a testament to the power that people’s movements, community advocates, & progressive coalitions have built,” she tweeted in celebration Friday evening.

“Thankful for that and the Biden admin’s decision to respond to organizers today. Now let’s get these families to their new homes here in the United States. 💜”

It’s not clear if she intends to offer up her own home to house these refugees.

What she wrote about the president’s decision being “a testament” was a reference to all the pressure that had been applied on him after the announcement earlier in the week to keep Trump’s refugee admissions cap.

But while some of the pressure came from “community advocates” and “progressive coalitions,” much of it came from congressional Democrats.

On Friday a squad of House Democrats led by Rep. Ilhan Omar sent Biden a letter demanding he raise the refugee cap.

“We have all been deeply distressed at the stories of hundreds of refugees who had been cleared for resettlement having their flights cancelled at the last minute, in some cases having already left their residences and sold their belongings,” they wrote.

“We must keep our promises to people who have fled unthinkably brutal conditions in their home countries and live up to our ambition to provide them a safe haven to re-start their lives.”

While it’s not clear yet how high Biden intends to raise the refugee admissions cap, while on the campaign trail last year he’d vowed to raise it to whopping 125,000. That’s almost as many as former President Barack Hussein Obama managed to sneak into the U.S. in 2017.

“[W]ithin the first 11 weeks of fiscal year of 2017 Obama had admitted 24,000 refugees to be resettled into the U.S. Before Obama’s term ended, he signed an order to allow 110,000 more refugees to be resettled into the U.S. before fiscal year 2017 ended,” according to World Relief Fox Valley, a pro-refugee non-profit.
