Biden admin reverses Trump’s pro-life policy, will ‘temporarily’ allow abortion pills by mail

The Biden administration and the FDA will “temporarily” allow women to receive the abortion pill Mifepristone (RU486) by mail instead of requiring them to see a doctor and get a prescription for the drug.

The pandemic is being cited as the reason for the Trump administration policy reversal. Some are calling the move an effort to turn women’s mailboxes into an abortion clinic. Many contend it is actually dangerous to women and girls.

According to CBS News, acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock wrote a letter on Monday to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists explaining that her agency would permit providers in select states to “exercise enforcement discretion.” She cited studies that negated any “serious safety concerns … occurring with medical abortion as a result of modifying the in-person dispensing requirement during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

March for Life, which is a pro-life organization, slammed the move by the FDA and the Biden administration: “With this action, the Biden administration has made it clear that it will prioritize abortion over women’s safety. Allowing unsupervised chemical abortions via telemedicine, without requiring timely access to medical care, will put women in grave danger.”

“Data released in 2018 by the FDA shows thousands of adverse events caused by abortion pills, including 768 hospitalizations and 24 deaths since 2000. Chemical abortions should have more medical oversight not less,” they warned.

CBS proclaimed that the “temporary” move by Biden ensured “abortion-rights groups one of their first major victories of the new administration.” This is just the first proposed action by the Biden administration to actively undo former President Trump’s pro-life policies concerning abortion restrictions. More are set to follow.

Many patients will now be able to speak with a doctor via video or on the phone in order to receive abortion pills by mail. The pandemic is being used as the reason for the new availability of the pills critics worry it will transcend the current emergency.

“We want people seeking abortion care to be to be able to access it whenever they need it, and to really have the ability to access whatever type of abortion care they need,” remarked Destiny Lopez, co-president of All* Above All. The group has urged the Biden Administration to permanently change federal rules for abortion pills. “Medication abortion is part of that fight for abortion justice because we know that the barriers that folks face are rooted in systemic racism and reflect ongoing inequities in our healthcare system.”

Wednesday, the Department of Health and Human Services put forth a rule change that reverses the ban on abortion referral services such as Planned Parenthood from receiving federal funding. Planned Parenthood was devastated financially by Trump’s ban.

According to CBS: “The current rules stemmed from the Trump administration’s promise to ‘defund Planned Parenthood.’ The rule change prompted Planned Parenthood to exit the program, forgoing an estimated $60 million. In 2018, more than four million people relied on Title X for health care services, 41% of whom received services at Planned Parenthood, according to the health clinic.”

Even though Biden claims to be a devout, lifelong Catholic, his actions concerning abortion indicate otherwise. Previously, he supported the 1980 Hyde Amendment that bans taxpayer dollars from being spent on abortions. Since he sought the presidency, he has reversed his position.

The rule will have to go through a notice-and-comment period and will face additional review before being finalized. That could take several months.
