President Joe Biden proudly reaffirmed on Thursday that he has nominated David Chipman to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
An ATF special agent for 25 years, Chipman is a fierce advocate for gun control. And that’s putting it mildly. His appointment is akin to having the fox guard the hen house.
Fox News host Tucker Carlson did a deep dive on Chipman’s zealotry on Thursday night’s episode of “Tucker Carlson Tonight” and came away with the conclusion that Biden “nominated a man who is unhinged from reality.”
Calling Chipman “a conspiracy nut,” Carlson pointed to a recent internet post saying Biden’s man claimed Branch Davidians shot down helicopters during the Waco siege in 1993.
“They didn’t,” Carlson noted. “No one aboard a federal helicopter was shot or injured that day. The helicopters also didn’t crash. That’s a bizarre claim to make from someone who was directly involved in the case, as Chipman was.”

He went on to call that incident “one of the worst things federal agents have done in this country.”
“If you’re taking over the ATF, maybe you could apologize for that,” Carlson suggested. “But no. David Chipman lied about it, and attacked the dead.”
That showed more evidence of a zeal than a generous spirit, the Fox News host said, before sharing that it gets worse.
“In a Reddit post, David Chipman suggested that people who fail background checks should be arrested on the spot,” he said.
Carlson shared a Chipman Reddit post: “While at ATF, I conducted studies involving people who failed background checks to determine how many later committed crimes with a gun—many did. This is a perfect opportunity to arrest people before committing crimes rather than responding after the fact.”
“‘Arrest people before committing crimes.’ That’s a brand new concept in American law, though the Chinese are highly familiar with it,” Carlson noted, heavy on sarcasm.
Bringing it back to the Biden family, he called attention to the shenanigans of Biden’s son, Hunter.
“Hunter Biden purchased a handgun illegally. He lied on a federal background check — That’s not speculation. He did. We’ve seen the form,” Carlson said. “So the question is, will David Chipman arrest the president’s son? And if he doesn’t arrest the president’s son, the question is: How exactly are you obligated to follow these rules?”
“That’s a serious question. Can you live in a country where the rules don’t apply to the president’s son, but you could go to jail for violating them? How can you participate in a system like that?” he asked.
Carlson said Chipman, who also wants to decide how many rounds you’re allowed in your magazine, locked his Twitter account and has reportedly scrubbed it well.
He also noted that Biden’s nominee said in 2018 that AR-15’s should be treated “just like machine guns.”
“Meaning banned,” Carlson said, adding that in 2012, Biden’s nominee suggested on MSNBC that the Secret Service shouldn’t carry firearms and that he “openly mocked the millions of Americans buying guns to protect their families from the crime wave Chipman’s party has unleashed on the country.”
He ran a clip of Chipman saying these armed Americans “might think that they’re Die Hard, ready to go, but unfortunately they’re more like Tiger King and they’re putting themselves and their family in danger.”
“It’s hard to imagine a flippant or more infuriating remark,” Carlson said. “If you bought a gun to protect your family, your business or your home during the riots that these people unleashed on the country, the conspiracy nut running the ATF calls you crazy.”
“People like David Chipman aren’t opposed to gun violence,” he concluded. “In fact, people like David Chipman, his party, certainly are making gun violence possible in this country.”
Gun Owners of America Vice President Erich Pratt told Fox News in a statement that the organization is “shocked at the brazen decision to nominate a registered anti-gun lobbyist to be director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.”
“David Chipman’s anti-constitutional lobbying career clearly disqualifies him from holding public office,” Pratt said.
Dudley Brown, president of the National Association for Gun Rights, was adamantly opposed to Chipman as well.
“David Chipman has been on the leading edge of ATF scandals for decades, all the way back to Waco – and now he shills for gun confiscation with Gun Control Inc.,” Brown said. “Chipman has embraced every hair-brained gun control scheme proposed, so of course Biden and Harris chose him – he’ll fit right in with their corrupt administration.”
