Rep. Dan Crenshaw blasted calls from left-wing activists to boycott Georgia in the wake of the state’s passage of a new voter reform law supporters say is meant to improve integrity as “progressive fascism.”
In an interview with Fox Business Network host Stu Varney on Wednesday, the Texas Republican and Navy SEAL vet suggested boycotts and similar punitive actions are reminiscent of totalitarianism.
“What is fascism? Look, fascism is the regimentation of the economy, of society. It’s the suppression of the opposition and it often elevates race above the individual as well. So what does that sound like to you? It sounds like these woke progressives in every respect,” said Crenshaw.
“You see Antifa roaming the streets calling themselves anti-fascist while they act as fascists. What’s happening now is the progressives have been able to conscript the institutions in their camp and make them do their bidding for them, whether it’s social media companies or now corporations and get them to spread the lies and the propaganda for them,” he continued. “And anybody who disagrees with them is labeled a racist.”
Crenshaw’s comments came amid a fiery exchange between LGBTQ activist and progressive strategist Aisha Mills and former Fox News host Eric Bolling during a BBC segment in which they discussed Georgia’s voting reform bill.
Mills defended corporate CEOs who publicly criticized the legislation after Bolling said that by doing so, they were effectively alienating half the population.
Corporations “should be on the side of democracy in the countries that they operate in,” she said, adding that voting should not be made more difficult, regardless of political party or “who you are.”
“That is fundamental to what we’re talking about here. So what corporations are doing is they’re saying, ‘Yeah, we don’t want to get into the partisan muck, but at the end of the day, why is voting a partisan issue?’” Mills said.
“Conservatives have a problem with that though because when the game is fair, they lose,” she added.
Bolling countered by noting that because of the law, Major League Baseball decided to pull its All-Star Game out of Atlanta, “which is 50 percent African American, and they did it on the heels of what Aisha has been told, has been fed from the Biden administration that somehow this voting rule is bad for African Americans in the state of Georgia.”
He then reminded Mills that former Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams and both Democratic U.S. senators from the state — “one of whom is African American” — have publicly said they disagreed with MLB’s decision to cancel the game in Atlanta.
“I think it’s really rich for any Republican, especially a white man, to run around and claim they care about the economic condition of black communities and black businesses when that’s all a lie,” Mills countered, eliciting an angry response from Bolling.
“You know what? That’s disgusting. I’m done. Put me off. That’s disgusting. I am nowhere near anything you are painting me to be, and the problem with American politics is exactly that. Because I’m white, you think I’m racist? That’s BS. I’m done,” he said before ending the interview.
That exchange appears to fall in line with Crenshaw’s observations.
“So, this is what I mean by the forced suppression of the opposition. This is why we should be calling this progressive fascism because they’re making sure that no other ideas are within the norms of debate anymore. They want to bypass debate,” he told Varney.
“That’s how — that’s what cancel culture is designed to do, deplatform, destroy somebody, and bypass the norms of debate. Make you think that what you believe, the normal common sense things that you believe, like, hey, if you show your ID to vote so we know who you are, we know you already voted, crazy, right?” the Texas Republican continued.
“Bypass that normal debate. Call you a racist, call it Jim Crow 2.0. So, the corporations are a part of this and we should be labeling it for what it is,” he added.
