US Capitol goes on lockdown after report of gunfire, multiple officers injured

The U.S. Capitol was locked down on Friday after numerous reports of gunshots ringing out in the area surfaced and the alleged shooting of multiple officers aired.

According to U.S. Capitol Police, all Capitol buildings have been locked down “due to an external security threat.” Staff members were informed that they were not to go into or exit the buildings.

Those already inside the Capitol are being allowed to move throughout the buildings but they have been instructed to stay away from exterior windows and doors. Those that are outside have been told to take cover immediately.

An anonymous source told the AP that police responded to a possible shooting near the Capitol complex. Details are still vague and it is not clear how many have been shot or injured. Two stretchers were seen with individuals on them.

Reports of a car smashing into the Capitol perimeter injuring two officers were also widely circulated.

*Update: It was later reported by NBC’s Frank Thorp that the suspect died.

According to Punchbowl News founder Jake Sherman, one of the officers involved has passed away:

A police helicopter landed on the east front of the Capitol during the emergency. The National Guard was reportedly ordered to report to the unit’s armory if they were not already at the Capitol complex.

NBC News is reporting that a suspect exited a vehicle and was brandishing a knife. He was shot by police.

D.C. Fire responded amid the chaos.  A suspect was reportedly taken into custody and brought to the hospital as were the injured officers.

Recently, security fencing surrounding the Capitol has been reduced.

“Please keep the Capitol Police and first responders in your prayers as we try to understand the situation unfolding at the Capitol right now,” Rep. Peter Meijer (R-MI) tweeted in response to the incident.
