While Krispy Kreme’s been busy doling out a free doughnut to anybody who’s obtained a coronavirus vaccine, one New Jersey gym’s been busy doling out a free membership to anybody who’s chosen to not obtain the vaccine.
Ian Smith, the co-owner of Atilis Gym, which became famous last year for refusing to shut down in accordance with the state’s draconian coronavirus lockdown restrictions, announced the stunning offer Tuesday on Twitter. And incidentally, he kind of credited Krispy Kreme for the inspiration.
Look:
In light of @krispykreme giving free donuts for receiving the CVD shot, here at @TheAtilisGym we are giving out free memberships to all who don’t get vaccinated. We believe in health – the real way – exercise, good diet, plenty of Vitamin D, Zinc, and an environment to destress.

Smith defended the decision to grant free memberships to those who abstain from obtaining a virus by arguing that the only “real way” to a healthy life is via “exercise, good diet, plenty of Vitamin D, Zinc, and an environment to destress.”
The tweet predictably provoked an outpouring of backlash.

COVID will like this tweet, perfect place for it to multiply and mutate. No thank you.

I lift heavy things, therefore I can just spout out irresponsible stupidities. I wear tight shirts, so I’m allowed to refute the medical community and turn a blind eye to 2.74 million deaths. I count my macros, so I can’t be bothered to wear a mask.
Am I doing it right?

Tip for you: The virus does not care how much iron you can pump or how many pushup reps you can do. This is dangerous misinformation.

This is so dangerous. None of those things protects people from Covid-19.

Some of the critics also came at Smith on a personal level by targeting him over over what happened in 2007, when, at the age of 20, he was involved in a fatal drunk driving accident that led to the death of 19-year-old Kevin Ade.
Look:
Given that you killed a teenager while driving drunk, I’m not surprised you’re incentivizing poor choices.

So more killing of people? You seem to like killing people. Do you recommend rectal UV also? Drinking disinfectant?

Where does “DWI with vehicular homicide” fall in your definition of health and wellness? asking for a friend.

Smith already addressed this part of his past in an Instagram video last year:

As for the current situation, Smith responded two days after posting his original tweet by pointing out in an additional tweet that, despite claims last year from lockdown fanatics that Atilis Gym’s refusal to shut its doors amid the crisis would trigger deaths, none of its members ever succumbed to the virus.
Almost a year ago MSM cried @TheAtilisGym was going to kill people by opening against lockdowns, the COVIDIOTS said we wouldn’t be relevant in a few weeks, and @GovMurphy said he was gonna shut us down. Well folks, nobody died, y’all still talking about us, and we’re STILL OPEN.

He also revealed that he’s been receiving endless hate mail and expressed confusion over why those who’ve been vaccinated and are therefore presumably safe from the coronavirus are so concerned about those who haven’t been vaccinated.
Look:
Got a lot of hate mail today. Did I say something wrong?

Struggling to understand why (some) people who get the rona vax worry so much about people who choose to not get it. If it works, what are y’all so worried about?

The insinuation was that there’s another factor at play — perhaps just groupthink or even a sick desire to control people and how they live.
Smith and fellow Atilis Gym co-owner Frank Trumbetti faced the same backlash when they refused to shutter their business last spring — and not only from the public, but also from Gov. Phil Murphy as well.
Over the summer, Murphy repeatedly fined the two men and reportedly even “seized” their legal defense funds. By December, they’d been fined up to $1 million, they’d had their business license stripped, they’d had their doors locked and barricaded, they’d been arrested and more — yet they were still open and serving lifters.

Not until September did gyms reopen in New Jersey, and even then, they were and still remain restricted by a mask mandate that Smith and Trumbetti have also refused to abide by.
According to Smith, masks do “absolutely nothing” to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (*Language warning):
Masks are like a blankie. Make you feel safe but does absolutely nothing. Y’all look like a bunch of fucking oversized babies. 😆 #maskoff
