Duckworth stands down, backs off threat to Biden over lack of Asian American representation

Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth has backed off from her threat to block President Joe Biden’s nominees, but not because she feels bad about her clear-cut racism.

On Tuesday, the Democrat lawmaker told CNN’s Manu Raju that she would be voting “no” on future Biden nominees until the president had committed to nominating more Asians to key executive branch positions.

According to Raju, part of her decision was rooted in how the White House had responded when she’d pressed them about nominating more Asian candidates. White House officials had allegedly told her that because of Vice President Kamala Harris, who’s half Indian, more Asians weren’t needed in the administration.

“To be told that you have Kamala Harris, we are proud of her, you don’t need anybody else is insulting. … That’s not something you would say to the Black Caucus: That you have Kamala, we’re not going to be put any African Americans in the Cabinet, why would you say that to AAPIs?” Duckworth reportedly said to Raju.

While her initial set of remarks weren’t blatantly racist, though they raised the question of why she was so obsessed with race/ethnicity, her next set of  remarks were seen by many as absolutely bigoted.

Speaking to a press pool, the Democrat lawmaker reportedly said she’d only vote “yes” on gay nominees and minority nominees, which is to say she’d vote “no” on all straight white male candidates.

I am a no vote on the floor, on all non diversity nominees. You know, I will vote for racial minorities and I will vote for LGBTQ. But anybody else I’m not voting for,” she reportedly said.

Hawaii Sen. Mazie Hirono, also a Democrat, reportedly issued the same pledge.

Both sets of remarks provoked backlash, though the outcry against the latter set was far more visceral.

Duckworth eventually retreated from her comments, but not because of any remorse. According to reports, she backed down because of a promise from Biden.

“Senator Duckworth appreciates the Biden Administration’s assurances that it will do much more to elevate AAPI voices and perspectives at the highest levels of government, including appointing an AAPI senior White House official to represent the community, secure the confirmation of AAPI appointments and advance policy proposals that are relevant and important to the community,” her communications director, Ben Garmisa, said in a statement Tuesday evening.

“Accordingly, she will not stand in the way of President Biden’s qualified nominees — which will include more AAPI leaders,” Garmisa added.

AAPI is yet another “woke” term — like “BIPOC” and “Latinx” — except this one refers specifically to “Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders,” i.e, Asians.

This whole debacle illustrates just how pernicious “woke” culture and mentality have become throughout the left-wing political world. Everything has become about race. And thanks to Biden continuously catering to the “woke,” much more of it is likely to follow.
