The long-term driving force behind the left’s toxic critical race theory is reparations, financial atonement for slavery and racial discrimination. Never mind there is not a single person alive in America today who has owned slaves, or a single person who has been held in servitude.
As Democrats continue to push for a financial windfall for black Americans — this being the ultimate enticement to vote for the party — get used to the refrain: “It’s not enough.”
Looking to beat the rush, the city of Evanston, Ill., voted 8-1 late Monday to approve a plan to make reparations available to black residents, Fox News reported — this being the first of its kind in the U.S.
Intent on accounting for lingering effects of slavery, the plan will distribute $400,000 to eligible households, with the Associated Press noting that these households would receive up to $25,000 for home repairs or down payments on property.
Overall, Evanston, a city of 73,000, anticipates that $10 million will be doled out over 10 years. The money being tax payer dollars, albeit coming from weed.
In addition to “donations,” the program will be funded by a 3% tax on recreational marijuana sales.
The proposal was met early on with claims of racism, with a group called Evanston Rejects Racist Reparations calling it “inherently anti-black.”
“We are demanding a name change to the current proposal,” the group said recently. “The current proposal is inherently anti-Black, and we reject this bill as any form of reparations.”
“We need to change the name of the current program because just having a housing program is not reparations,” group organizer Sebastian Nalls said.
“This is not fully in scope and fully beneficial to the Black community,” Nalls added. “Reparations is not just payment towards individuals that have been targeted by inequalities, but it’s also proving the harm that took place will not take place again and ensuring that more harm will not be caused.”
Not that Nalls opposes reparations, but he thinks residents should get direct payments and spend the money however they want.
Ald. Robin Rue Simmons, who first proposed the initiative in 2019, told the New York Times, “It is the reckoning. We’re really proud as a city to be leading the nation toward repair and justice.”
She also made it clear that this is only the beginning. A foot in the door.
“It is, alone, not enough,” Simmons declared, according to the Chicago Tribune. “We all know that the road to repair and justice in the Black community is going to be a generation of work. It’s going to be many programs and initiatives and more funding.”
U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, reintroduced legislation in January to fund a commission for studying and developing proposals for reparations to account for the “lingering effects of slavery on living African-Americans and society,” according to Fox News
“The commission shall examine slavery and discrimination in the colonies and the United States from 1619 to the present and recommend appropriate remedies,” the legislation reads.
A study by several college professors put the ultimate cost for reparations at $6.2 quadrillion — add another zero to trillion.
Citing unpaid hours slaves worked, putting a price on massacres and discrimination, and adding in interest, the study calls for $151 million for each black American. All 41 million, the Washington Examiner reported.
Lee also supports a commission on Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki let it be known last month that President Joe Biden supports the effort.
“He certainly would support a study of reparations,” Psaki said. “He understands we don’t need a study to take action right now on systemic racism, so he wants to take actions within his own government in the meantime.”
Certainly, you didn’t expect otherwise.
