Maher slams ‘woke’ culture, says it’s preventing America from winning ‘battle for 21st century’ with China

Liberal comedian Bill Maher argued Friday on “Real Time” that America’s obsession with wokeness is destroying its ability to stand up to the world’s greatest threat, China.

In a segment lasting a bit over six minutes, he aimed his fury at everything from the woke obsession with Dr. Seuss to the woke obsession with Mr. Potato Head’s genitals.

He began by declaring, “You’re not going to win the battle for the 21st century if you are a silly people, and Americans are a silly people.”

As just one example of why, he pointed to the controversy over Dr. Seuss’s books.

You know who doesn’t care that there’s a stereotype of a Chinese man in a Dr. Seuss book? China. All 1.4 billion of them could give a crouching tiger flying f–k because they’re not a silly people,” he said.

This isn’t to say that they have a good government.

“We all know China does bad stuff. They break promises about Hong Kong autonomy, they put Uyghurs in camps and punish dissent. And we don’t want to be that, but it’s got to be something between authoritarian government that tells everyone what to do and a representative government that can’t do anything at all,” Maher noted.

He then listed China’s achievements — building hundreds of cities, cornering major markets, developing sweeping infrastructure, etc. — and contrasted them with America’s inability to accomplish a single goal.

Interestingly, he chose specifically to cite the failures of California, the most left-wing state in the entire country — a state that, incidentally, President Joe Biden seeks to emulate.

“California wanted to build high-speed rail connecting the entire state but alas, could not. We’re six billion in the hole just trying to finish the track connecting the vital hubs of Bakersfield and Merced — one small step for nobody, one giant leap if you’re a raisin,” he said.

Similarly, he added, nothing is being accomplished on the national level because the woke are obsessed with more apparently pertinent matters like gender politics, while conspiracy theorists like #BlueAnon and #QAnon are obsessed with conspiracies.

“On a national level, we’ve been having infrastructure week every week since 2009, but we never do anything. Half the country is having a never-ending woke competition deciding whether Mr. Potato Head has a d–k [male genitalia] and the other half believes we have to stop the lizard people because they’re eating babies,” he said.

“We are a silly people. Even when we all agree on something like getting rid of the penny, no, the inertia, the ass covering, the graft, the lawyers, the cowardice. Nothing ever moves in this impacted colon of a country,” Maher continued.

“We see a problem and we ignore it, lie about it, fight about it, endlessly litigate it, sunset-closet kick it down the road and then write a bill where a half-assed solution doesn’t kick in for 10 years.”

True, though part of the problem are overburdensome regulations. Did you know that, thanks to regulations, in some states you can’t even braid someone’s hair for money without going through hours and hours of expensive training?

“China sees a problem, and they fix it. They build a dam [while] we debate what to rename it,” Maher added.

In fact, these days Americans debate what to rename practically everything, including but not limited to pancakes, sports teams and even cities.

“It took 10 years just to get two bus lines through environmental review. The Big Dig, a tunnel in Boston, took 16 years, and don’t get me started on my solar hookup,” Maher continued.

“China once put up a 57-story skyscraper in 19 days. They demolished and rebuilt the San Yuan Bridge in Beijing in 43 hours. We binge watch, they binge build.”

True, though again, overburdensome regulations play a big role in this, and it just so happens that the Democrat Party loves creating more regulations.

Speaking of the Democrat Party, Maher also noted the newfound push among “woke” leftists — i.e., “progressives” — to destroy meritocracy and replace it with so-called “equity.”

“There’s a progressive trend now to sacrifice merit for equity. Colleges are chucking the S.A.T. and A.C.T. test, and in New York Mayor de Blasio announced merit would no longer decide who gets into the schools for advanced learners but rather a lottery system,” Maher said.

This is true.

“You think China’s doing that, letting political correctness get in the way of nurturing their best and brightest?” he then asked.

You think Chinese colleges are offering courses in the ‘Philosophy of Star Trek,’ the ‘Sociology of Seinfeld’ and ‘Surviving the Coming Zombie Apocalypse?’ Those are real, and so is China. They are eating our lunch, and believe me, in an hour they’ll be hungry again.”

He wasn’t kidding. Every course he listed is indeed real, as are the courses below, as reported by The Daily Caller back in 2015 (to be fair, some of these courses may now be defunct):

  • “Wasting Time On The Internet”
  • “On Being Bored”
  • “Stupidity”
  • “Kanye Versus Everbody! [sic]”
  • “The American Vacation”
  • “The Sociology of Miley Cyrus: Race, Class, Gender, and Media”
  • “Demystifying the Hipster”

Welcome to 21st-century “Woke” America …
