Democratic senator tries to blame Trump for Biden border debacle, Bill Cassidy not having it

Speaking on Fox News’ “Fox News Sunday,” Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy, a known Russian collusion conspiracy theorist, claimed that former President Donald Trump is responsible for the current crisis at the southern U.S. border.

This president inherited a mess from Donald Trump in terms of immigration, and he’s trying to fix it in a humane way. The surge at the border began last fall. In the last four months of Donald Trump’s presidency, there was an 80 percent surge in apprehensions at the border,” he told Fox News host Chris Wallace.

When Wallace pointed out that border apprehension charts show spikes in January and February, Murphy deflected by noting that the highest number of border apprehensions were recorded in 2019 under the Trump administration.

Murphy neglected to mention that then-President Trump had tamped down the surge by instituting a series of strong illegal immigration policies, including but not limited to the “Remain in Mexico” agreement that President Joe Biden has since undone.

The senator also apparently forgot to take into consideration the many times during the 2020 presidential election that then-Democrat presidential candidate and then later nominee Biden had promised illegals this, that and the other.

Some of those promises were noted by Sen. Ted Cruz recently:

Also speaking on “Fox News Sunday,” Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy, a Republican, vehemently pushed back on the thesis proposed by Murphy, though to be clear, Wallace spoke with him before he later spoke with the Democrat lawmaker.

However, when asked whether the current president’s policies are to blame for the ongoing crisis, Cassidy replied virulently with a yes.

“Empirically, it is entirely. You can’t help but notice that the administration changes and there is a surge,” he said, adding that Biden is now only making it worse.

As an example, he pointed to words spoken recently by U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Roberta Jacobson, who during a White House briefing last week announced in English that the border is closed but then announced the opposite in Spanish.

“I can tell you the Spanish version is being heard, not the English,” Cassidy said, adding that combined with Biden’s policies, these things incentivize more illegal immigration.

And so when people think they can get in, they begin sending their unaccompanied child on a trainride across Mexico where she may be kidnapped and trafficked, on the hope that they’re going to be waved through at the border.”

Listen to Cassidy’s thoughts on the matter below:

His sentiment is shared by a large number of high-profile figures, including Trump era Immigration and Customs Enforcement acting director Thomas Homan.

A veteran of six administrations, Homan blamed Biden’s policies for ruining established security measures and incentivizing border crossings to the point that over 100,000 crossings had been made between February and March alone.

“That’s triple what was a year ago under Trump policies. When you release thousands of people into the United States, some with even COVID, and you don’t want to detain them, then you send a clear message to the world. So their actions speak much louder than what the words are attempting to do,” he said last week on Fox News.

“In [the past], we built detention centers, we built 3,000 family beds, we built adult facilities, we held people, and after they lost their case, ICE removed them. The surge went down, because we ended the enticements. They’re doing it the complete opposite now, not by accident, not by incompetence, but by design. This is an open-borders agenda, and they’re not hiding it very well.”

Local officials have said the same.

We had it under control” under the Trump administration, Arizona Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannels said on Fox News earlier this month.

“A year ago today, we were running, just on our camera system, 300 to 400 a month. In August, when the politics kicked up, we jumped up to 1,200 a month. In December, it was over 2,500 illegal entries to include over 500 pounds of illicit drugs. I just got the charts [the other day], it’s skyrocketing back to numbers we saw in 2019,” he added.

Except the current president has no intention of implementing the strict policies needed to tamp down this surge. If anything, it seems he intends to keep making overtures to illegal aliens.

“Department of Homeland Security is offering migrants who were separated from their children by the previous administration the option to reunite either here in the U.S. or in their destitute countries of origin. Tough choice!” the Washington Examiner sarcastically reported around the start of the month.

“Biden is further sweetening the deal by offering ‘transportation, healthcare and mental health services as well as legal, career and educational services, with no costs being passed down to families.'”
