A new study appears to confirms the devastating ramifications of COVID-19 lockdowns on America in the context of a purported spike in mental healthcare insurance claims for anxiety, depression, and self-harm among the age 13-18 cohort.
The data “showed us — it’s something we have been echoing for months now. Our children are suffering from this pandemic, specifically the lockdown, the social isolation, and being out of school,” said Fox News medical contributor Dr. Nicole Saphier.
In the long term, officials (who are often in Democrat-controlled jurisdictions) will have a lot of explaining to do, she implied.
Dr. Saphier told Fox & Friends host Ainsley Earhardt that based on the data, insofar as the the initial pandemic lockdown for teenagers is concerned, “mental health claims doubled as a fraction of their percent of overall claims, overdoses over 90 percent, substance abuse over 90 percent, and those only got worse in April [2020].”
The radiologist went to say that the situation improved over the summer, but “there was a drastic increase in self-harm claims that occurred right as children were going back to school again, and in my opinion, that really does coincide with the anxiety children felt as they were being told that they weren’t able to go back to in person.”

In the segment, the doctor was referring to a report from Fair Health, a nonprofit organization that monitors health insurance claims, which is consistent with data from two European studies.
Remote learning appears to be ineffective in the public school system, Dr. Saphier hinted, which likely seems to confirm the feelings of a great majority of parents and their kids.
“Children, we are all social creatures, but children truly need structure; they truly need social interaction, because that is how — it’s fundamental to their development, and if they’re not getting that, it is, of course, going to be devastating to their mental as well as their physical health.
“That is something that we have been talking on this program for a year now, Ainsley, and they are not following the science. They are not making it a priority to get our children in school…we will look back in a couple of years and they’ll be a lot of finger-pointing because people have done intentional harm to our children,” the physician concluded.
In a recent broadcast, Earhardt’s Fox News Channel colleague Tucker Carlson also highlighted the Fair Health findings even as primarily left-wing teachers’ unions across the country, whose members have been collecting their full salaries during school closures, are politically fighting tooth and nail against going back to in-person, classroom learning. The United Teachers of Los Angeles union is just one example.

“Thanks to the coronavirus lockdowns, children are 10 times more likely to die from suicide than from the coronavirus they’re meant to be protected from,” Carlson said, adding that “if the teachers’ unions have their way, your child may die of a drug OD before going back to school.
“And if you complain about that, you’re a white supremacist.”
