Candace Owens rips ‘despicable’ Democrats over Calif. proposal to ban ‘boys’ and ‘girls’ sections in retail stores

Conservative commentator and author Candace Owens flamed “despicable” Democrats over a California proposal to ban “girls” and “boys” sections in clothing, toy, and other retail outlets.

“California has proposed a bill to ban boys and girls sections in toy and clothing stores to create a “safe space” for children. They want to fine retailers 1,000$ for using the words ‘boy’ and ‘girl,’” she wrote on Twitter. “I cannot put into words how positively despicable Democrat politicians are.”

Owens comment was in response to a piece of legislation introduced in the Democrat supermajority California Assembly by members Evan Low and Cristina Garcia last week that requires a retailer with 500 or more employees to “maintain undivided areas of its sales floor” so as to create a “safe space” for kids.

The bill comes as some large retailers have already begun to get rid of gender-based sections and signage. Target launched an initiative in 2015 after some customers said identifying products and toys by gender was no longer necessary, Fox News reported.

The legislation goes on to refer to “unjustified differences in similar products that are traditionally marketed either for girls or for boys” in implementing the ban.

The measure also requires e-tailers and retailers with web sites to “dedicate a section of the [site] to the sale of those items and articles that is titled, at the discretion of the retailer, ‘kids,’ ‘unisex,’ or ‘gender neutral.’”

“As much as I’d like to think of this as watershed legislation, this is something the industry is already doing. We’re just trying to play catch-up,” Low said in an interview with the Sacramento Bee.

The state assemblyman also said he sought to develop the legislation after a staffer’s daughter expressed frustration at having to find a science toy in the “boys aisle.”

“That was the impetus of this, which is how do we make a safe space today for children in society,” said Low, who is chair of the California Legislative LGBT Caucus, according to The Bee.

He and Garcia, who chairs the California Legislative Women’s Caucus, first introduce the measure last year but it went nowhere as legislators instead prioritized the pandemic.

He said it was important to get the bill passed and put into effect as more retailers begin opening in the wake of the COVID pandemic so kids can shop around “without stigma.”

If the measure passes, it would take effect Jan. 1, 2024. Any retailers who refuse to make the change would be fined $1,000.

Low noted that the measure, Assembly Bill 1084, is similar to a number of laws in California, including one that prohibits stores from marking up goods that are aimed at women, another mandating that corporations put women on their boards, and still another that calls for gender-neutral bathrooms.

“That’s our agenda, those are our California values and that’s our agenda,” Low told The Bee.

The paper said that Rob Smith, founder, and CEO of The Phluid Project, which is a gender-free clothing and fashion brand, helped craft the language of the bill.

“I just want to remind people we’re always in a state of un-learning and re-learning,” he told The Bee.
