Texas Republican Rep. Dan Crenshaw took to the House floor to rail against the Democrats’ HR1 legislation… the “For the People Act of 2021.” It ostensibly hands control of state and local elections to the federal government.
The Act summation reads: “To expand Americans’ access to the ballot box, reduce the influence of big money in politics, strengthen ethics rules for public servants, and implement other anti-corruption measures for the purpose of fortifying our democracy, and for other purposes.” However, it allegedly does exactly the opposite.
Crenshaw opened his fiery remarks with a strong rebuke of Democrats: “There’s this mythology among Democrats that common-sense rules in an election are synonymous with voter suppression. They make it sound like you have to go through an obstacle course to go vote. This isn’t true. It’s nonsense and everybody knows it.”
He continued: “Truth is that four out of five Americans support voter id laws and countless Americans have expressed concern because they receive mail-in ballots for other people
addressed to their homes. They want this fixed and they don’t want the problem to get worse. But this bill makes elections less trustworthy, not more, and trust is everything when people can see the faults in the process whether it’s ballots at the wrong house or careless verification processes. They believe people are cheating.”

“You can’t just dismiss that we have to fix it. But instead, this bill makes permanent the problematic election practices that cause distrust. For example, ballot harvesting, which creates serious chain of custody issues; universal mail-in voting without safeguards, which creates the kind of chaos where your ballot ends up in somebody else’s hands; or forcing states to disregard their own voter ID laws and use sworn statements instead of an ID,” the conservative lawmaker noted.
“The integrity of our elections must be self-evident, wherein the mere possibility of fraud is improbable because the process itself is airtight and secure. Many states do not meet this standard. We should be working together to make elections more secure not less and if that is indeed our mutual goal and I pray that it is, I implore my colleagues to work with us,” Crenshaw concluded.
Crenshaw is not alone in his disdain for HR1. “This bill is nothing more than a shameful attempt to shovel public funds to the campaign coffers of corrupt Washington liberals,” American Action Network President Dan Conston told Fox News. “Especially in a time of unparalleled health and economic crisis, public funds should be used to help end the suffering of this pandemic – not to help Washington politicians get re-elected.”
Democrats also claim the bill would “improve access to the ballot box.” It would allegedly do so by implementing automatic voter registration across the nation. The legislation would also restore voting rights to felons who have served their sentences. It would also expand early voting and push absentee voting by nationalizing voting by mail and possibly on the Internet.
The legislation would also commit Congress to deliver “full congressional voting rights and self-government for the residents of the District of Columbia, which only statehood can provide,” do away with and ban voter roll purges, and would attempt to end “partisan gerrymandering” of congressional districts.
Mitch McConnell labeled it as the “Democrat Politician Protection Act” in a released statement and declared that Democrats were attempting to “change the rules of American politics to benefit one party.”
