Former RNC chair Michael Steele to Trump supporters open to third party: ‘There’s the door’

Former Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele has never been a fan of former President Trump and said on MSNBC Monday that Trump supporters who want to form a third party should just leave.

“You have 46 percent of the folks saying they will follow Trump,” Steele stated on “Morning Joe” Monday. “I’m like, OK, there’s the door. Y’all go do your thing, and we’ll just pick up the pieces on this side and keep moving. And that’s the battle.”

He made the statement in reference to a Suffolk University-USA Today poll that overwhelmingly shows Trump supporters are still firmly behind the former president: “By double digits, 46%-27%, those surveyed say they would abandon the GOP and join the Trump Party if the former president decided to create one. The rest are undecided,” USA Today reported.

“We feel like Republicans don’t fight enough for us, and we all see Donald Trump fighting for us as hard as he can, every single day,” Brandon Keidl, a Republican and small-business owner from Milwaukee stated after taking part in the poll. “But then you have establishment Republicans who just agree with establishment Democrats and everything, and they don’t ever push back.”

Steele has claimed previously that Trump is not a conservative and announced he planned on voting for Biden for the presidency in 2020.

Trump lambasted the GOP following a harsh rebuke from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) concerning his alleged role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. The former president slammed McConnell as “a dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack.” Trump then issued a very believable threat that he would back primary challengers to incumbents who were supported by the Republican establishment. That incensed Steele.

Steele was at the helm of the Republican National Committee during the Obama administration. Now, he’s mulling a run to become governor of Maryland. He is advising Republicans to forget Trump and to figure out “where we go as a national party from here.”

“I know I’m not everyone’s favorite cup of tea within my party,” Steele stated. “I never have been. I don’t let those things bother me.” Steele was also part of the now-disgraced anti-Trump Lincoln Project.

“When you’re losing Republican members and you’re left with QAnon and Proud Boys, you’ve got to reassess whether or not you’re even close to being a viable party,” the former RNC chair said in a Lincoln Project video.

Looking at the recent Suffolk University-USA Today poll, Steele says the Republican Party is still “pretty Trumpian.” He lamented that Trump’s ideology has become “bedrock inside the GOP.”

“You’ve got the national leadership making their way down to Mar-a-Lago to confer with Trump,” he noted in reference to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA).

The former GOP leader has praised Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Adam Kinzinger of Illinois for taking a stand against Trump. ″[They’re] standing on one side saying, ‘Here’s the rational, conservative approach to small government, effective leadership, individual liberties, etc.,’” Steele proclaimed. “And then there’s this. The Trump Party.”

“We’re in this know-nothing period of the GOP,” Steele snarked. “And the question for a lot of us remains, what do we do next?”
