Activist Marc Lamont Hill, who has previously called for the eradication of Israel, told Democratic Socialists of America in a virtual discussion that Black Lives Matter solidly supports the “dismantling of the Zionist project.”
On Feb. 6, a video conference was held by Democratic Socialists of America’s BDS/Palestine Solidarity National Working Group, along with the National Political Education Committee, the Afrosocialists and Socialists of Color Caucus (AFROSOC), and the DSA Muslim Caucus. Marc Lamont Hill was the featured speaker.
Hill was fired from CNN in 2018 as a commentator after being filmed calling for the freeing of Palestine “from the river to the sea.” That is a Palestinian euphemism for destroying the state of Israel and replacing it with an Arab state. Hill is now a professor of media studies at Temple University.
“We can’t dismantle white supremacy or imperialism section by section” and proclaimed that the sentiment applies to Israel as well. He referred to the Jewish state as “a settler-colonial movement in Palestine,” he said in the video posted earlier this month.

Hill claimed in the video that Israel is somehow responsible for police brutality against minorities in the United States: “US police are being trained in Israel and some Israeli police are being trained in the United States.” This is known as “Deadly Exchange” and is frequently cited by anti-Israel activists. It is considered a blood libel by Israelis.
Hill went on to say: “This generation of activists are saying, no let’s defund. No, no, let’s abolish. Let’s imagine new possibilities. And one of the new possibilities that they’ve imagined is a world where that is anti-imperialist, that they don’t want to just nation build, but they want a world make. And so Black Lives Matter, very explicitly is talking about the dismantling of — of — of a Zionist Project, dismantling of a settler-colonial project, and very explicitly embracing BDS on those grounds. So it’s analytical, it’s tied — our fates are tied up, but there’s also a very clear political mission that I think is far more progressive or radical than we had even 20 years ago in the mainstream.”
This is apparently an attempt to delegitimize Israel and deny its right to exist. Hill’s comments were deemed by many to be extremely antisemitic in nature.
One of the panelists told Hill, “That was deep.” That same panel included top Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) activist Omar Barghouti, a strong proponent of annihilating Israel.
During a speech at the United Nations, Hill also promoted violence against Israel:
“Contrary to western mythology, black resistance to American apartheid was not purely nonviolent,” he stated. “Tactics otherwise divergent from Dr. King or Gandhi were equally important to preserving safety and attaining freedom. If we are in true solidarity, we must allow them the same range of opportunity and political possibility. We must recognize the right of an occupied people to defend themselves. We must prioritize peace, but we must not romanticize or fetishize it. We must promote nonviolence at every opportunity, but cannot endorse narrow politics that shames Palestinians for resisting, for refusing to do nothing in ethnic cleansing,” Hill said at the time.
In 2019, Hill also produced a documentary film that featured a Palestinian terrorist who was convicted after bombing civilian targets in Jerusalem. He has also recently written a book: Except for Palestine: The Limits of Progressive Politics.
Melissa Landa at the Jewish News Syndicate is calling for Temple University to fire Hill over his antisemitic overtures.
The IHRA Working Definition of antisemitism states that “accusing Jews as a people of being responsible for real or imagined wrongdoing … even for acts committed by non-Jews,” “denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination,” and “calling for, aiding, or justifying the killing or harming of Jews in the name of a radical ideology” are all antisemitic statements.
