Ed Mullins, head of the New York Police Department’s union, the Sergeants Benevolent Association, is not backing down over his salty language.
An NYPD officer since 1982, Mullins has led the union for more than 18 years and is facing discipline for calling the city’s former health commissioner a “b*tch” and a city council member a “first class whore” on social media — the target of the latter remark was Ritchie Torres, billed by NBC News as “the first openly gay Afro Latino” elected to Congress in November.
Mullins sent a letter Monday to union members and declared, “I WILL NEVER BE SILENCED.”
“As you may have read, CCRB has filed charges against me for advocating for your rights and for calling out gutless politicians and bureaucrats who lie and put police officers’ lives and safety at risk,” the union chief wrote.

The CCRB is the Civilian Complaint Review Board — the police watchdog group has recommended two charges for offensive language against Mullins, according to the New York Post, and one for abuse of authority.
A defiant Mullins defended his tweet directed at Torres.
“I rightfully called him a ‘first class whore’ for his unscrupulous moral values and selling out our safety for his political ambitions,” he said. “My comment was in direct response to Torres’ political campaign against the men and women of the NYPD.”
Torres had called for a probe into a potential police slowdown last summer during an epidemic of shootings, the Post reported. American cities were being rocked by Black Lives Matter riots at the time, following the death of George Floyd.
“It came at a time of tremendous turmoil in this City when members of this Department were the targets of bottles and bricks being thrown at them,” explained Mullins. “Nor shall we forget police vehicles being firebombed and overturned. Make no mistake, I stand by my words. Nothing has changed. And I offer no apology!”
The other tweet was from last May and directed at then-health commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot over a report she replied to a NYPD request for more masks, “I don’t give two rats’ asses about your cops.”
“I referred to her as a ‘bitch’ who had ‘blood on her hands’ for her callous, unpleasant, difficult and malicious disregard of cops,” Mullins said in the letter. “Let’s not forget that members of the NYPD were not given protective equipment until we were well into the Pandemic, and that many of our members had already died when she dismissed us as undeserving of masks.”
“Mayor de Blasio’s Commissioner later apologized to the NYPD and acknowledged her deplorable statement against supplying front line police officers with essential N-95 masks was wrong,” he wrote. “Again, I stand by my words. Nothing has changed. And I offer no apology!”
Referencing previous actions attempted against him, Mullins assured members that the “unrelenting efforts to silence me will not succeed.”
“Be assured: CCRB has targeted the wrong person!” he wrote. “The dirty little secrets of the NYPD and of elected officials deserve to be made public!”
