Gaetz: New Comey email indicates FBI, DOJ conspired to ‘dislodge’ Trump from White House

Rep. Matt Gaetz said Monday that a newly uncovered email indicates that former FBI Director James Comey made a conscious effort to “dislodge” then-incoming President Donald Trump from office.

In an interview with Fox News, the Florida Republican and staunch Trump ally responded to a report by Just the News which provided details of communications between Comey and then-Director of National Intelligence James Clapper regarding the validity of the infamous “dossier” produced by former British spy and FBI asset Christopher Steele.

Comey emailed Clapper to say that the bureau was “not able to sufficiently corroborate the reporting” contained in the dossier, but the communique was sent on the same day Comey signed off on a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant against one-time 2016 Trump campaign adviser Carter Page. The warrant certified that the contents of Steele’s dossier, which contained highly salacious claims about Trump, were accurate.

“We are not able to sufficiently corroborate the reporting,” Comey wrote in a Jan. 12, 2017 email to Clapper that was recently declassified in response to an open records lawsuit by the Southeastern Legal Foundation.

At the time of the email, the CIA had already told the FBI that Page was not linked to Russia but was instead a U.S. intelligence asset. In addition, the FBI had been warned about the accuracy and reliability of Steele’s Russian source network, including that it may have actually been penetrated by Moscow’s agents who then spread disinformation.

Finally, the FBI had also recommended on Jan. 4 that the probe into then-incoming National Security Adviser Michael Flynn be shut down because no evidence had been found he was colluding with Russia.

None of that mattered to Comey, however, Gaetz suggested.

“Not only did our own Justice Department set up the president on the Russia hoax, they did it with rotten information and they knew the information was rotten when they did it,” Gaetz told host Sean Hannity after throwing shade at special prosecutor John Durham, who has allegedly been engaged in a criminal probe of the ‘Russiagate’ spy origins but who has not been heard from in months.

“That is [a] premeditated effort to try and dislodge a duly elected president of the United States,” Gaetz, author of the new book “Firebrand,” added.

“Why hasn’t anyone been held accountable?” Gaetz continued, channeling viewers’ reactions. “The truth is that former Attorney General Bill Barr, he dragged us all along. There was this expectation that there would be this accountability. We didn’t see it come to fruition.”

The Florida Republican went on to express doubts that anyone would be held liable for any criminal activities related to the Obama-era “Spygate” probe now that a Democratic president is in the White House.

“You know, I know, and all of the viewers know that there’s not going to be accountability under the Biden Justice Department because none of the career people there think the way to move up in the Biden Justice Department is to expose the Russia hoax,” Gaetz predicted.

“Instead they’re going to be targeting the President [Trump], his family members and the supporters of the America First movement,” he added.
