DeSantis touts the economy in his ‘free’ state of Florida, smacks Biden as a ‘lockdowner’

The national media’s COVID-19 drama has had no bigger villain than Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Yet DeSantis, despite overseeing the largest population of those most vulnerable to the coronavirus, continues to outperform most of the country, including many of his Democratic counterparts, in his state’s rates of infections, deaths, hospitalizations, and vaccinations.

Now, you can add the economy to that list.

On Sunday, during an interview with Fox Business’s Maria Bartiromo, DeSantis touted Florida’s economic success during the pandemic. He noted that the Sunshine State was among the national leaders in homes sales, new housing starts, hotel construction and other metrics.

As far as new home construction, DeSantis noted, the leading place in the country for that is The Villages, the Central Florida retirement community for people 55-plus. That has “thrived during the pandemic even though, of course, seniors are more vulnerable to COVID than the bulk of the population.”

“You have lockdown states that are putting people out of business. We focused on lifting people up,” said DeSantis, maintaining that entrepreneurship was taking off.

“People view Florida as a place where they can follow their dreams. It is a free state,” DeSantis said.

“There’s a whole bunch of things we’ve been doing for COVID, but at the same time, we’ve lifted our state up, we’ve saved our economy and I think we’re going to be first out of the gate once we are able to put COVID behind our country,” DeSantis added.

During the interview, DeSantis also criticized the Biden administration for reports last week that a domestic travel ban was under consideration.

He called it unconstitutional and said it would be a “political attack” on Florida.

He noted that Florida ranks in the lower half of the states when considering mortality and infection rates.

“Every parent in Florida has the right to send their child to in-person instruction, every worker has a right to work and earn a living and put food on their table and every business has the right to operate and consequently, our state is doing very well compared to these other states in terms of education and economy,” he continued.

“States that are always held up by people in Biden’s administration, like New York, have way higher per-capita patients hospitalized for COVID right now,” DeSantis told Bartiromo. “So there’s no basis in medical, there’s no basis in economics, there’s no basis in reality to do this except to punish a state that is doing it better than what his experts have recommended.”

“Biden is a lockdowner, his advisers are lockdowners,” the governor asserted. “Lockdowns don’t work. We’ve demonstrated that. We’re not turning back, Maria, and they will not be able to get away with targeting Florida.”
