House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., experienced a veritable meltdown after the Senate failed to convict former President Donald Trump at the conclusion of his trial Saturday.

In an impromptu press briefing held afterward, the House leader flounced around while shrieking about the “cowardly senators,” slamming podiums and flashing her thumb.

The briefing began normal enough, with the speaker strutting into the room equipped with her ostentatious mask, ready to lavishly praise the House impeachment managers on behalf of virtually everybody on Earth, including even her grandchildren.

“I have to say, personally, on behalf of my grandchildren who drew great hope and inspiration from each and every one of you, we could not be prouder of your patriotic presentations, the clarity with which you presented and, again, the inspiration you have been to so many people, so I thank you for that,” she said.

What triggered her into a meltdown was when, after she’d finished speaking and begun walking away from the podium, a reporter asked her whether censuring Trump is a viable alternative option, given as Republicans are open to it.

Pelosi abruptly performed a 180, angrily stomped to the podium, slapped it with her hand and then flung her thumb out like a maniac as she began ranting.

Censure is a slap in the face of the Constitution that gives, lets everybody off the hook. It lets everybody off the hook,” she huffed and puffed.

Oh, these cowardly Senators who couldn’t face up to what the President did and what was at stake for our country are now going to have a chance to give a little slap on the wrist? We censure people for using stationery for the wrong purpose. We don’t censure people for inciting insurrection that kills people in the Capitol.”

Watch:

She wasn’t entirely wrong, in that Democrats don’t censure people for virtually anything, including but not limited to spouting antisemitic comments and cheering on violent riots.

As for the dubious claim that Trump was responsible for “inciting [an] insurrection,” the majority of Republican senators who voted to acquit him did so because they believe this accusation is grossly false.

One of those senators, Ted Cruz, explained in a statement after the vote that while “Donald Trump used heated language,” “he did not urge anyone to commit acts of violence.”

“The legal standard for incitement is very high and it is clear by the results of this vote that the House Managers failed to present a coherent standard for incitement,” Cruz added.

Plus, had Trump been convicted for incitement, then a large number of Democrats — including Pelosi — would have been eligible for their own impeachment and conviction considering their history of incendiary rhetoric.

Returning to the speaker’s press conference, she spent most of it ranting about the “cowardly Republicans” who’d voted earlier that afternoon against humoring the Democrats’ allegation that Trump had incited the Jan. 6th riot at the U.S. Capitol.

“[W]hat we saw in that Senate today was a cowardly group of Republicans who apparently have no options because they were afraid to defend their job, respect the institution in which they serve. Imagine that it would be vandalized in so many bad ways that I won’t even go into here, and that they would not respect their institution,” she kvetched.

“That the President of the Senate, Mike Pence – ‘Hang Mike Pence’ was the chant and they just dismissed that,” Pelosi continued. “Why? Because maybe they can’t get another job. What is so important about any one of us? What is so important about the political survival of any one of us that is more important than our Constitution that we take an oath to protect and defend?”

It’s not clear how Republicans voting in favor of an unconstitutional conviction, as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell described it in his own post-vote speech, would have helped them maintain their oath to protect & defend the Constitution.

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden issued his own statement complaining about “this sad chapter in our history” and calling for “the lies” to be defeated.

“This sad chapter in our history has reminded us that democracy is fragile. That it must always be defended. That we must be ever vigilant. That violence and extremism has no place in America. And that each of us has a duty and responsibility as Americans, and especially as leaders, to defend the truth and to defeat the lies,” he said.

“That is how we end this uncivil war and heal the very soul of our nation. That is the task ahead. And it’s a task we must undertake together. As the United States of America.”

If he’s sincere about his desire to “defeat the lies,” he might want to consider starting with the incessant lies pushed by White House press secretary Jen Psaki.
