In news that is just breaking, it turns out that rock superstar Bruce Springsteen was arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated on November 14, 2020, in his home state of New Jersey. He is due in federal court sometime this month.
Many are highlighting the plot twist as Springsteen appeared in and narrated a two-minute car commercial on Super Bowl Sunday. In the sanctimonious ad for Jeep, Springsteen championed unity and people meeting in the political middle while putting aside their red vs. blue differences.
It appears that Jeep may have pulled the video from YouTube, but the car maker may have some explaining to do — under the circumstances — as to why it decided it was okay to air the ad to a nationwide, if not international audience, on February 7, 2021. A related question is why the news of the three-month-old celebrity arrest, which is or should be a matter of public record, is only making headlines now.
As far as the content of the commercial is concerned, the anti-Trump celebrity never expressed similar patriotic sentiments after Election 2016, however.
The Springsteen bust took place at Gateway National Recreation Area, a 27,000-acre park in Sandy Hook, N.J., which is apparently under federal jurisdiction. In addition to the alleged DWI that occurred near the Jersey Shore, cops reportedly cited the iconic musician for reckless driving and consuming alcohol in a closed area, according to TMZ, which first reported the arrest.
With an estimated net worth of $500 million, the rock star can easily afford a driver, or an Uber, so maybe he will consider that option in the future.
“In his 2016 autobiography, Born to Run the singer writes that he didn’t have his first drink until he was 22 as “My experience with my father had been enough. The terrifying, all-engulfing presence he became when he drank convinced me to never go there. He lost who he was,” Vanity Fair recalled about Springsteen.
A spokesperson told the outlet that Springsteen, 71, was cooperative with officers during the traffic stop, so he apparently knew who was “Boss” in this particular encounter.
Presumably, cops administered a breathalyzer at the scene, but that is unconfirmed even as the DWI revelation is just surfacing.
“He was Bombed in the USA!,” the New York Post quipped, but no legal proceeding is conclusive until a court adjudicates a matter based on the evidence and applicable law. Springsteen apparently has no priors for alleged drunk driving. Over the years, he reportedly filmed a few videos at the park.
The Springsteen camp has yet to issue a public comment on the DWI arrest. Check back for possible updates as this story continues to unfold.
In the meantime, the (mostly) satire on social media is coming in hot. Here is a sample of the reaction so far:

Bruce Springsteen was arrested for DWI and reckless driving in New Jersey. I wonder if he was driving his unity Jeep when he made that selfish decision?

How wasted do you have to be if you're Bruce Springsteen and a NEW JERSEY cop busts you?

I don’t always drive drunk at a National Park but when I do, Jeep endorses me anyway because I’m woke – Bruce Springsteen

I can't believe @Jeep would feature a man facing charges for RECKLESS DRIVING and a DWI in their Super Bowl Ad!
What were they thinking?!
Bruce Springsteen could have killed someone!! He doesn't deserve endorsement deals, ESPECIALLY from car companies!!
