Is the Trump-hating left trying to steal the term “patriot” from conservatives who have essentially owned the word since the tea party days?
Progressives are forever trying to manipulate language to persuade a leery public, and on Wednesday MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski declared “You’re not a patriot if you can’t see what happened here.”
Brzezinski was talking about the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, targeting Republican lawmakers who do not support former President Donald Trump being impeached for allegedly inciting violence.
She pressed the point that the violent few who broke away from an earlier “Stop the Steal” rally “came because of Trump. And everybody knows it.”

“Everybody knows why these people were there desecrating the people’s house, ruining things, hurting people, murdering people, maiming people and using the American flag as a weapon,” Brzezinski said. “They were doing it for Trump.”
Mrs. Joe Scarborough tried her best to summon up a little emotion in her oversell.
“The frustrating thing here is that this has to be explained explicitly to Republicans, and they turn away. They can’t make this math themselves,” Brzezinski said. “If you can’t see what happened here, look in the mirror, because there’s a big problem with your moral core and — you’re not a patriot if you can’t see what happened here, and stand on the right side of history.”
Scarborough cheered his wife on as she ranted, slamming Republicans for having a problem with their “moral core” if they refuse to believe Trump’s words prompted an attack that authorities now believe was preplanned days and even weeks ahead.
“It’s not stupidity. I’m sorry. It’s something way worse,” Brzezinski said. “This is evil.”
The Morning Joe crew was running footage included in a dramatic video compilation Democrats showed Tuesday during their opening arguments in Trump’s impeachment trial — the footage captured the violent scenes from the storming of the U.S. Capitol, though it was criticized for deceptively editing out part of the former president’s actual remarks.
Trump’s defense attorney David Schoen said the “professionally made” footage had “great entertainment value… but that’s not going to advance the cause — any cause of good in the country.”
“Literally, the Democrats, the House managers probably hired a large movie company and a large law firm to put together this thing,” Schoen said during an appearance on Fox News. “It’s a matter of tricking the American people to play this — as if the rioting was going on in real time with the speech. What’s the purpose of that? Why do we want to trick the American people?”
As for Brzezinski’s outrage, Fox News host Greg Gutfeld put such emotion in perspective.
“Forgive me if I’m jaded, after Portland and Seattle, Kenosha, Chicago, Atlanta, SoHo and other targets of mass violence that the currently outraged that you see right now ignored,” Gutfeld said. “I hold all violence in contempt, and I will not be lectured by hypocrites who favor one mob or the other. If you don’t see all violence as bad, you are not worth my time!”
