Michele Bachmann rips ‘absolutely sick’ media coverage on riots, reveals she was locked in Capitol for 5 hours

Former GOP Congresswoman Michele Bachmann slammed vindictive Democrats and ripped into the mainstream media for the “absolutely sick” way the U.S. Capitol riot has been covered.

The former Republican lawmaker from Minnesota told guest host Mark Steyn on “Fox News Primetime” on Monday that the media has been on a mission to destroy the “legacy” of former President Donald Trump and his supporters and that Democrats are engaging in “bad political dinner theater” with their second attempt to impeach him.

Bachmann revealed that she was “locked-in” at the Capitol during the riot last month after spending time in prayer at the chapel on the grounds.

“So you were a lot nearer to the action then Rashida Tlaib or AOC, but you weren’t invited to tell your story of survival in the House of Representatives the other night,” Steyn said to Bachmann, referring to the therapy session that unfolded in the House chamber when some lawmakers shared their feelings about the events on  January 6 – even if they weren’t actually there.

Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib joined other Democrats, led by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, crying over the incident despite admitting she was not at the Capitol that day. Ocasio-Cortez had also shared a social media video in which she claimed she thought she was going to die when what turned out to be a Capitol Police Officer banged on her office door.

“I was there. I wasn’t there by design,” Bachmann told Steyn on Monday.

“I was there because I wanted to be there to pray because that was a big day, when they were going to certify the election results. And actually, when I left and walked through the Rotunda, I think that some of the people had actually already breached the building, but I did not see them. I walked out and couldn’t get out because we were locked in and I was locked in for about five hours after that,” the former 2012 GOP presidential candidate added.

“Well, you’ve seen – that was a month ago –  you’ve seen this narrative that the left has constructed since with the assistance of the media,” Steyn interjected. “They basically weaponized that event on January 6th to serve their purposes. It is kind of creepy to have what seems to me a largely fake narrative that’s been imposed on what happened that day.”

“Well, it is a fake narrative. It is absolutely sick because, like you said, they are trying to destroy the names and reputation, the legacy of all the people who voted for Donald Trump for a second term,” Bachmann, who was recently named the dean of Regent University’s Robertson School of Government, agreed.

She contended that the attacks on the legacy of the former president’s supporters are also aimed squarely at him as well, telling Steyn that she considers Trump to be “the greatest president in my lifetime. ”

“What he achieved on a public policy level is incomparable to any other president. And yet, he’s been made toxic in the last month, and we are being made toxic if we even admit that we voted for him either the first time or the second time,” she said. “That is the objective: Destroy Donald Trump’s name, his business, his finances, his political legacy and his political future, and destroy any of us who admit to supporting his agenda.”

Steyn asked Bachmann her thoughts on the upcoming Senate impeachment trial of the former president, which he called out as a “political trial” since there is no precedent for trying to impeach someone who is no longer even in office.

‘This is not a legal proceeding by any stretch of the imagination. This is bad political dinner theater. That is all we are going to get this week,” she responded.

“But again, what are the purposes for this?” she asked.

“The first purpose is to destroy Donald Trump, destroy any opportunity that he would have for his own name and a political future. They also want to send the signal that anyone who deviates from present-day groupthink is going to be gonesville in the future,” she noted.

“And third, the other thing they want to do, is to make sure that they can distract from what is happening in the White House,” Bachmann continued.

“Right now, its a grand theft larceny of the American form of governance, our constitutional republic. Instead, we are getting some sort of a lawless hierarchy,” she asserted.

“Because what happened in November with the elections wasn’t  simply a transfer from a Republican administration to a Democrat administration. This is a hightailing of it, of our form of government. On paper, we are still a constitutional republic, but in practice we’re a lawless hierarchy,” she concluded.

Steyn agreed, saying that was “a good phrase.”

“I was going to say the Joe Biden has been governing by royal proclamation,” he added, “but that actually does a disservice to royal proclamations.”
