GOP Rep. Rogers is ‘not that unhappy’ that Dems are distracted by Trump and other Republicans

House Armed Services Committee ranking member Mike Rogers, an Alabama Republican, isn’t exactly displeased with congressional Democrats’ obsession with persecuting former President Donald Trump and current Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene.

During an interview Friday with Alabama station WAVH, known more commonly as FM Talk 106.5, the lawmaker explained that the more time Democrats waste on “silly” stunts, the less time they spend passing catastrophically bad bills.


“I’m not that unhappy about what they’re doing. I hope this impeachment trial in the Senate lasts three months. If they’re spending two or three months on an impeachment trial, they’re not passing bills into law,” Rogers said.

And going by experience, he believes that if Democrats fail to pass any meaningful legislation by the summer at the latest, no major legislation will wind up being passed, period.

“I’ve been doing this a long time. The further you go into an election cycle, the dimmer the chances of you passing meaningful legislation are happening,” he explained.

“If you want to get big things done, you better do it in the first three or four months of a two-year cycle because big things don’t happen the closer that election gets to you. I want them to spend a lot of time on silly stuff because that means they’re not passing bills,” he added.

The only problem with this argument is that it neglects to take into consideration President Joe Biden’s executive orders.

As of Feb. 6th, he’d already signed dozens of executive orders, and all with overwhelming support from congressional Democrats.

Even before Biden was inaugurated into office, in fact, Democrats were already pushing him to go big on the executive front.

“On Capitol Hill, they’re making the case that the incoming president cannot afford to wait and see if Sen. Mitch McConnell and fellow Republicans will be amenable to compromise on items that require 60 votes for passage, or if the votes are there to reform the legislative filibuster,” Politico reported last month.

At the time, Sen. Brian Schatz told Politico that he was “pushing” Biden “to do as much as possible in the executive order space.”

Since being inaugurated, Biden has done exactly that:

Continuing his remarks on WAVH, Rogers then suggested that he’s hopeful that, in case Republicans retake the House in 2022, they have the “nuts” to give Democrats a taste of their own medicine.

“I hate what they’re doing with what we call MTG, Marjorie Taylor Greene, because it’s just a terrible precedent. They’re trying to hold something somebody said before they were in Congress and take their seats away. And plus, we have never allowed in the history of the Congress, allowed the majority party to decide what committees minority parties are in. It’s always been each party decided that for themselves,” he said.

“This is a terrible precedent, but I can just tell you — if they go and do this, we’ve made it clear to them in 22 months, when we’re in the majority, we’re going to do the exact same thing to them. They’ve got more nuts than we’ve got. We’re going to take them off their committees for the crazy stuff they’ve said, as well,” he vowed.

As to whom Republicans might target, the list is “yuge” and includes pretty much every single member of the notorious “squad.”

“Squad” members Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar are both seen by critics as rabid antisemites who’ve repeatedly made disparaging remarks about Jews while in office.

“Squad” member Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez meanwhile smeared U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement centers as “concentration camps” only weeks before a left-wing extremist committed a terrorist attack on an ICE facility in Washington State.

After the attack, the congresswoman and her peers then refused to condemn the extremists who’d perpetrated it:

Now compare this behavior to that of Greene, who this past week condemned her past remarks and apologized for them. No apologies have ever been forthcoming from the likes of Tlaib, Omar and Ocasio-Cortez — nor their peers Cori Bush and Ayanna Pressley.

This despite Pressley having called for more “unrest” in the streets amid the violent, deadly Black Lives Matter riots last summer.

And this despite Bush having recently been caught on video harassing Greene in the halls of Congress:

Members of the “squad” aren’t the only House Democrats whom Republicans could target.

While speaking at an event in New York City in 2017, current House Financial Services Committee chair Maxine Waters said she would “go and take Trump out tonight.” She was never held accountable for this.

In 2018, Waters was filmed telling a mob of supporters to harass and intimidate Trump administration officials. She was never held accountable for this.

The following year, current House Small Business Committee chair Nydia Velázquez allegedly threatened a 16-year-old boy on Twitter for mocking her. She was never held accountable for this.
