Nunes claims powerful forces are shielding Pelosi from tough questions about poor Capitol security

House Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Devin Nunes suggested Monday that Speaker Nancy Pelosi ought to be more heavily scrutinized for an apparent lack of security ahead of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, but she’s been protected by the establishment and social media majors.

“Ultimately, she’s responsible, OK, whether or not her staff or her sergeant of arms, you know, she’s the mayor of the capitol. It’s a big responsibility,” the California Republican told Just the News’ John Solomon.

Nunes referenced reports that Capitol Police had requested support ahead of the date when a joint session of Congress was set to meet to count electoral ballots and then-President Trump was scheduled to address a large rally. That support included National Guard troops and protective fencing around the building.

However, the request was denied by a panel that included the House and Senate sergeants at arms as well as the Capitol architect.

“If you go back in time, somebody would say she (Pelosi) ought to be coming out and be pushed on these questions. Who in your office knew? And when did they know it? Did you know it?” Nunes said of his California Democratic colleague.

“And she ought to be out there saying, look, here’s what happened. We, you know, made a mistake. You know, we collectively as in the Capitol Hill,” Nunes told Solomon during his podcast. “Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy didn’t tell Pelosi or the sergeant of arms, ‘Hey, no fences, no National Guard.’”

Nunes isn’t the only Republican asking questions.

In an interview last month with Fox News, Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina noted as well that Pelosi is responsible for securing the Capitol Building Complex and added Republicans “will get to the bottom” of the security lapse.

“I understand what happened on January the 6th was one of the low points in my time in office,” he told Maria Bartiromo. “It was horrendous to see these people take over the Capitol, the House, and the Senate, beat officers, defile the seat of government, how in the hell could that happen? Where was Nancy Pelosi, it was her job to provide Capitol security? We will get to the bottom of that.”

As for Nunes, he told Solomon that he was approached just hours before the riot by Capitol Police who were concerned that intelligence indicated an assault was possible. However, he said he could not help much because the majority of Democrats had not given House members many details regarding worries about security.

“The Capitol Police were worried about this. I mean, so much so that they would come to me as the former chair of the House Intelligence Committee, the top Republican, and say, ‘Hey, you know, what’s going on here?’ And I said, ‘Gosh, it doesn’t sound good.’ And you know what? I hadn’t at that point, I had no idea that they had asked for fencing, they had asked for additional guards,” Nunes explained.

He went on to say that many of his constituents are angry about the fact that basic questions about the assault such as how many people entered the Capitol still have not been answered.

Nunes blamed that on the mainstream media and social media.

“Somebody should be able to get me an estimate. There’s plenty of cameras. How many people went into the Capitol, right? OK. We still don’t have that number,” he said. “… Secondly, you’d want to know, who were the people that actually broke the windows and did the damage? Those people need to be prosecuted immediately, right?” Nunes said.

“Nobody knows the truth. Why? Because the press, that the Democrats own, are not asking the questions that a real press would do,” he added.

“And then of course, if you say anything about it, John, if you report the facts, good luck, because … Facebook’s gonna take the post down,” he said.  “Twitter, Instagram, you name it, they’re going to take it all down.”
