Arizona state Republicans move to censure Jeff Flake, Cindy McCain; Gov. Ducey may be next

The Republican Party in Arizona is seeking to hold Cindy McCain and former Sen. Jeff Flake accountable for their support of Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election.

Biden became the first Democrat to win Arizona in a presidential election since 1996, albeit by a slim margin, and state Republicans are now looking at a censure of Flake and McCain, the widow of the late GOP Sen. John McCain, for failing to support President Donald Trump as the GOP incumbent in the 2020 race.

The state’s Republican Party, led by Chairwoman Kelli Ward, revealed its “Censure McCain” resolution last Sunday and will consider the move at the party’s annual meeting on Jan. 23.

The update, according to the @AZGOP Twitter account, came after an erroneous report that the Maricopa County Republican Party had voted to censure McCain.

The late Sen. McCain was also censured by the state party in 2014 for essentially being too liberal and his wife has now not only openly endorsed Biden during the election campaign but has joined the advisory board of the Democrat’s transition team.

A draft of the proposed resolution to censure McCain noted that she has “supported leftist causes such as gay marriage, growth of the administrative state, and others that run counter to Republican values, a Republican form of government, and the US Constitution.”

“Cindy McCain has supported globalist policies and candidates, including Democrats such as Joe Biden, in direct opposition to Republican values, the interests of the American people, and the Constitution of the United States,” the draft reads, adding that she has also “condemned President Trump for his criticism of her husband and erroneously placed behaviors over actual presidential results.”

The Arizona GOP plans to object to McCain being a member of the Republican Party and officially censure her at the upcoming meeting, adding in the draft text that “the Republican Party in the State of Arizona agrees to dissolve any connections whatsoever to Cindy McCain.”

McCain was reportedly not surprised by the resolution and the “continuous insults and personal attacks from Arizona GOP Chairman Kelli Ward,” according to an interview in  The Arizona Republic.

“As Chairman of the AZGOP she managed to turn Arizona blue in November for the first time since 1996,” she said. “Maybe she should be reminded that my husband never lost an Arizona election since his first win in 1982; he and Governor [Doug] Ducey are the last two Republicans to win statewide races in Arizona.”

Republican Gov. Doug Ducey may also be censured by the Arizona Republican Party over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic in the state. Meanwhile, the Maricopa County GOP did move to censure Flake last week for his endorsement of Biden as well.

“If condoning the president’s behavior is required to stay in the Party’s good graces, I’m just fine being on the outs,” Flake tweeted, adding in another post about McCain: “I’m in good company.”

State Republican Party spokesman Zachery Henry slammed McCain for pushing a “false narrative” about a “perceived grudge.”

The censure, Henry argued, is more a “tragic indictment by the Republican Party of Arizona at large of her own efforts to campaign for and support left-wing Democratic candidates.”
