Sen. Ted Cruz and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez exchanged heated words on Twitter after the self-described Democratic socialist from New York accused him of giving neo-Nazis a pass.

The exchange began after Cruz was critical of “President-elect Biden’s choice to call his political opponents literal Nazis,” which he described as “really sad” and divisive.

“This kind of vicious partisan rhetoric only tears our country apart,” he added.

Ocasio-Cortez responded with a claim that there was a “Neo-Nazi presence” at the U.S. Capitol Building riot last week while criticizing Cruz’s objection to a slate of electors from Arizona. She also falsely claimed that people “tried to hang the Vice President,” while calling on Cruz to “resign.”

“They wore Auschwitz shirts, erected gallows, and tried to hang the Vice President. Your continued excusal and denial of Wednesday’s Neo-Nazi presence is abhorrent and dangerous. The most healing and unifying thing *you* can do is take responsibility for your actions and resign,” she wrote.

“Epic hypocrisy. Facts: 1) Nazis are evil bigots. 2) You & your anti-Israel pals blocked a resolution condemning antisemitism—which I passed unanimously in the Senate. 3) Unless they are genocidal, calling your political opponents Nazis is atrocious,” Cruz replied.

After accusing Cruz of “lying,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote, “Pull the Clerk record. I proudly voted for the resolution against antisemitism you cite. Your statements are growing increasingly erratic and unfounded in fact. I do not call all my opponents Nazis. But rest assured, Neo-Nazis are my opponents.”

“Not true. The “record” you cite is the show vote on the watered-down House resolution AFTER you BLOCKED the resolution condemning antisemitism,” Cruz replied.

“You support BDS. And you demand candidates promise NOT to visit Israel,” he added, a reference to the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement begun by Palestinians to encourage economic punishment of Israel.

Cruz included a link to a March 7, 2019, New York Post story headlined, “Pelosi passes watered-down condemnation after Omar’s anti-Semitic tweets,” which described a House-passed resolution that began as an effort to punish then-freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) for a pair of tweets.

After implying that Jewish-American lawmakers had “dual loyalty” to Israel and that their support was “all about the Benjamins” — a reference to money — the House voted 407-23 for the resolution that didn’t even contain Omar’s name.

“We are having this debate because of the language one of our colleagues, language that suggests Jews like me who serve in the United States in Congress and whose father earned a purple heart fighting the Nazis in the Battle of the Bulge, that we are not loyal Americans?” Rep. Ted Deutch (D-Fla.) said at the time.

“Why are we unable to singularly condemn anti-Semitism? Why can’t we call it anti-Semitism and show we’ve learned the lessons of history?” Deutch added.

Cruz also included a link to an August 14, 2020, WCBS Newsradio report noting that, in order for candidates running in New York City Council races to get the support of “prominent Democratic Socialists” like Ocasio-Cortez, “he or she must pledge, if elected, not to travel to Israel.”

“There are two questions, not just one question. There’s a second question about the Boycott Divestment and Sanction movement of Israel that they are calling for these candidates to support,” Jewish community relations vice president Michael Miller said, labeling the travel pledge “despicable.”

“The fact that these questions were posed, singling out the state of Israel as opposed to any other country in the world, yes, this is anti-Semitic,” he added.
