‘Seen this movie before’: Georgia runoff follows familiar script of vote dumps and stopped counts

If Tuesday’s Senate runoff elections in Georgia looked familiar, that’s because they pretty much followed the same script that played out during the November election, down to late-night vote dumps and counting being stopped.

The end result was favorable to Democrats as control of the Senate will likely shift. Rev. Raphael Warnock, a radical-left candidate marred by domestic abuse allegations that the media all but ignored, has been declared the winner over Republican incumbent Sen. Kelly Loeffler — by this same media.

And, in what looks to be a “twofer,” Sen. David Perdue is trailing Democrat Jon Ossoff, who holds a 16,370 vote-lead, 50.2% to 49.8% — that race hasn’t been called, but rarely in American politics does a Republican find additional votes like Democrats always seem to.

As for stopping the count, as the entire nation awaited results from the Peach State, there were reports that Chatham County closed shop and went home for the night with ballots still to be counted. This prompted a denial from election officials, who said they stopped, but they really didn’t stop.

Workers at the Chatham County elections annex that were processing absentee ballots were sent home for the night, WTOC 11 reported Tuesday night just after 11 p.m.

The CBS affiliate said the workers will return Wednesday morning around 10 a.m. to process “around 3,000 to 4,000 absentee ballots” that came in on Tuesday.

Chatham County’s Board of Elections Chairman Tom Mahoney responded to suggest that they will not be the only county in Georgia still counting on Wednesday — perhaps the state should look to its southern neighbor Florida, which has twice the population, to learn how to produce election results on election day. A novel concept, no?

“I anticipate that those state-wide results are going to be very close,” Mahoney said. “So if we’re talking about three or four thousand votes in Chatham County, I’m afraid that’s going to be significant in the state race. And I’m sure that we’re not going to be the only county that’s going to be counting a few thousand more votes tomorrow morning.”

Remarkably, MSNBC reported that “they did go home, but apparently they did a lot of work that will be released after they leave,” and that “there is a release of votes that is imminent … after everybody has left. So somebody stayed to release the vote.”

Gabriel Sterling, voting systems implementation manager for the Georgia Secretary of State’s office, took a break from bashing President Donald Trump on CNN, to say they stopped but they “didn’t just stop.”

He assured all, that while counting stopped, it was because workers “completed the counting of everything they have in” … except the absentee ballots that came in on Tuesday.

About the CNN gig, Sterling appeared on the network Tuesday night to say the blame for GOP losses “falls squarely on the shoulders of President Trump.”

And yes, his appearance on the network on Election Night was “weird.”

But don’t worry folks, these are the same authorities telling us to move along, and that there’s nothing to see here.

There’s a fair argument to be made that Majority Leader Mitch McConnell did not want control of the Senate, making the election about whether or not folks receive $2,000 stimulus checks.

Either way, folks on the right who keep losing tight elections to Democrats, grow more and more cynical, quickly losing faith in the integrity of our electoral process — while the GOP stands idly by.
