Republican Congressman contests wins of 67 House members from battleground states. Here’s why.

On Sunday, U.S. Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) unsuccessfully attempted to prevent the seating of 67 House members from Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, comprising those battleground or swing states where the Trump campaign has alleged fraud in the vote for president.

In calling for a roll-call vote for those lawmakers, Roy’s premise was that if the presidential contest was rigged, then the congressional elections in those states are also sketchy.

In a statement, the second-term congressman from the San Antonio-Austin area wrote, in part:

“I do not make this objection lightly and take no pleasure in it, but believe that I am compelled to do so because a number of my colleagues — whom I hold in high regard — have publicly stated that they plan to object to the acceptance of electors from those particular six states due to their deeply held belief that those states conducted elections plagued by statewide, systemic fraud and abuse…”

“Such allegations – if true – raise significant doubts about the elections of at least some of the members of the United States House of Representatives that, if not formally addressed, could cast a dark cloud of suspicion over the validity of this body for the duration of the 117th Congress….”

Roy received a lot of praise from the blue-checkmark brigade (which won’t last long). Roy’s parliamentary objection, which turned out to be wholly symbolic, prompted an objection to the objection from House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.). and was voted down by a 371-2 margin.

Incoming House members were then sworn-in to office as scheduled, and Nancy Pelosi was narrowly re-elected as Speaker.

Congressman Roy’s resume includes a job as chief of staff to U.S. Sen Ted Cruz. Roy’s boss is one of about 11 senators who intend to object to the Electoral College certification of Joe Biden’s purported win.

Roy is obviously not joining with 100-plus Republicans in the House who plan to do the same even though he insists that he is “outraged” about all the questions about the election that are still left unanswered.

Roy may not have fully considered that improprieties in key precincts that directly impact the presidential contest, especially with thousands of mail-in ballots containing a presidential selection that left down-ballot races blank, may have had no effect on most congressional races.

For example, commenting on Roy’s objection, Rep. Jeff Van Drew, who switched from Democrat to Republican last year, told the Washington Examiner that “I don’t really understand why [Roy] would do that. Certainly, I think we need maximum integrity in our elections, but these folks didn’t have an issue, there was no issue there. Those elections were clear-cut. Presidential election is different.”

In response to Scot Presler’s claim that Roy has encouraged a primary opponent to come forth in 2022, pundit Ryan James Girdusky implied that Chip Roy is no RINO. Ultimately, it will be up to Roy’s Texas constituents to make that call, however.
